Catching up from yesterday--here's my #BirdOfTheDay.

I love the look at the underside of a duck's wing in the lefthand photo. Maybe it's the coloring of this particular duck, but it always reminded me of an angel.

Two cedar waxwings high up in a bare tree with thin branches. The one on the left is looking up and to the left. The one on the right has a dark tan head and is looking at the camera. One wing is open and the other is a little bit open. He's wearing a black eye mask and has a brown head.

I had a busy day today so just grabbing a quick photo for #scape, #FlyDay and #BirdOfTheDay #WingsOpenNotFlying. Hopefully one wing open isn't cheating.

I really need to get a program to edit RAW files but this will do.

For today's #BirdOfTheDay theme of #WingsOpenNotFlying I have a couple of Trumpeter Swans raising their wings during a battle for mating rights.

One of themes today is wings open, not flying. Being cheeky with this coot - they don’t really fly but rather, they run across the water, dragging their feet along

Two photos combined in a single image, both featuring rear views of the same Little Grebe or Dabchick (Tachybaptus ruficollis). Dabchicks are small, plump waterbirds which dive for small fish and aquatic insects. In the top photo the Grebe is rising from the water, with wings open; the plumage we see is mostly greyish, with dark brown on the head and running down the middle of the back to the rump. The rear end of the bird, which has no discernible tail, is pale (whitish and brown) and fluffy. In the lower photo the Grebe is is floating on the water, turned slightly to the left, and with the head turned fully to the left so that we see the large patch of reddish-brown on the lower half of the head, and the short black beak with a yeollow patch at its base.

Post #13 in my Brandon Marsh thread, and a late entry for #BirdOfTheDay (theme #WingsOpenNotFlying), features a Little Grebe or Dabchick. Displaying a fluffy butt, first with wings open and then with wings closed, this bird was active by the Ted Jury Hide last week. #Birds #UKWildlife #EKC 🌿

Anhinga, back to the sun, wings open wide. Black bodied bird, light brown to beige neck, yellow patch at eyes and pale yellow long sharp beak. Outstanding and distinctive white stripes, very geometrical, on it's wing-backs. Unusual spot, standing with the lower portion of its body in the water. Most often found fully out of the water, or all the way in searching for tasty snackerals. Odd seeing a partial sun bath from the belly button down....

Shot into the morning sun, this image shows a number of Black Vultures on the tops of dead palm trees. The sun flare has caused some unintended lens flare effects, a small ball of transparent yellow and a ball of transparent pink can be seen as well as flared rays off the sun. The trees and birds on top are all black and stand in stark contrast against a brilliant blue sky. The birds are all medium body size and are all black with featherless leathery heads, wrinkled and gray. There are eight black vultures in this frame, six of which are holding their wings wide catching the morning warmth of the central Florida sun.

Great Blue Heron, captured adjusting the nest materials. Wings held open wide for balance as it attempts to get that last little stick placed just-so. Head down, keeping a close eye on the stick placement. Largest of waders, this bird is mostly a gray-blue coloration with black ovals on side of neck, and black pattern with white oval on top of head, almost like typical male pattern baldness. The lighting for this shot was well into sunset, the bird and the cypress tress behind it are all bathed in a golden glow, affected the usual colors seen.

Roseate Spoonbill, actually a young example. Short bill, feathers and colors still coming in. This Teaspoon is standing with both wings wide open and stretched well above its back as it adjusts it's position in the family nest. Spoonbill parent and sibling are seen to it's left, with another adult in softer focus well back in the image. These birds are mostly a coral pink - to - red coloration with white under neck and body. Bright orange bill, the long flat style ending in a large round ladle, or spoon shape. This little one shows the round spoon coming on, but the length of bill has barely started.

A double-crested cormorant is seen in profile perched a top a metal-capped wooden dock post. The birds wings are spread in a downward position. The head is tilted up at a 45 degree angle and the beak is open wide and the downward-curving hook at the end of the top beak is prominent.

I see that #WingsOpenNotFlying is today's #BirdOfTheDay theme, and I think I have one that qualifies. Double-crested cormorant. I thought sure he/she would launch into flight, but it didn't happen. I think the wide open beak with that nasty hook on the end is a nice added feature. #birds
