A grey heron stands at the grassy edge with its long pinkish bill angled forward and its grey, black and white plumage sharply defined. Long wispy breast plumes hang from its chest like a pale beard, and the dark head plumes are also pronounced, giving the bird an elegant, slightly windswept look typical of breeding plumage. This matches descriptions of grey herons in breeding condition, when long ornamental plumes on the breast, lower fore-neck and head become more developed.
