1177 John de Courcy, an Anglo-Norman knight, invades Ulster and builds Dundrum Castle. 1203 - Hugh de Lacy replaces de Courcy as lord of Ulster 1205 - De Courcy attempts and fails to recapture castle. 1210 - King John besieges the castle and Hugh de Lacy flees to France. 1227 - De Lacy regains "his" lands under King Henry III and returns to Ulster 1234 - De Lacy dies and Dundrum reverts to royal possession 1333 - The castle is described as 'a ruinous castle, which is of no annual value'. 1517 The Earl of Kildare captures the castle from the Magennises. 1601 The Magennises recapture the castle from Lord Mountjoy, the Lord Deputy of Queen Elizabeth. 1605 The castle is sold to the Governor of Lecale, Lord Cromwell. 1636 Sir Francis Blundell purchases the site. 1641 During the Irish Rebellion, the castle falls to Irish forces but is recaptured by Parliamentary forces and used as a garrison. 1652 The Parliamentary garrison abandons the site, rendering it indefensible. 1800S The castle passes to the Marquis of Downshire, who encourage the development of Dundrum village and makes some alterations to the castle. 1954 The monument is placed In State Care.

The Quoile, Down Cathedral, round to the ruins of the Casterician Abbey, founded by Norman invader, John De Courcey, 1180. Was a monastic site here from 800, but this one was founded in expiation for the sacking of nearby Erenagh Abbey.
