Sometimes known as Rain flies or Dalmatian flies - there is, I read, 10 very similar species in the UK - and i'm not going to kill it to get an ID.

Very pretty as dipterans go...

Enough of this for now...

A photo of a wild Otter, foraging for food in a local river.

The Eurasian Otter had declined across its range in the second half of the 20th century, primarily due to pollution and pesticides. Other threats included habitat loss and hunting, both legal and illegal. But, Otter populations are now recovering in many parts of Europe. In the United Kingdom the number of sites with an Otter presence increased 55% between 1994 and 2002. In 2011, the Environment Agency announced that otters had returned to every county in England.

A butterfly with reddish wings and large light coloured eye spots in its forewings, and dark eye spots on its hindwings is resting on a dense cluster of white blossom. It's facing upwards, and its antennae are clearly visible. The background is a kind of dreamy blurred range of whites and light grey.

Opened the filler cap on our new water butt today to find a colony of hydrophilic Hexapods have taken residence. The wonderfully diminutive Springtails are very welcome.

They are not insects.

A large plant with big, fleshy leaves and white and yellow flowers, growing on shingle near the sea. The River Rother can just be been in the background. It's sunny, but there are clouds in the sky.

The first Sea Kale flowers are out at Rye Harbour NR and soon a sweet honey aroma will hang over the shingle.

#BirdOfTheDay theme is #FeederFriends, birds you might see at your feeder. Blue Tits are common garden visitors, looking pristine early in the year. The young are a delight, but tending them can leave the adults looking worse for wear as the year progresses! #ukwildlife #birds @alan678.bsky.social

Photographed yesterday at Lamplighters Marsh (Bristol) - This yellow and black hoverfly is Myathropa florea. It's commonly called the 'Batman' hoverfly because of the shape of the marking on the top of the thorax. (16.04.26) #hoverflies #ukhoverflies #invertebrate #ukwildlife
