Redstart

Redstart

Great to see at least 4 Redstart back at Pal y Cwrt yesterday evening. First (pictured) was mostly silent at the base of the valley whilst three more vocal birds were busy chasing each other towards the top. Couple of Green Woodpeckers also. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birds #birdsSeenIn2026

Cuckoo - honest!

Cuckoo - honest!

My first Cuckoo sighting of the year today at Pant y Sais when this male flew in calling and perched high up on a distant tree. Later it paused briefly in the reserve proper before moving on again. Couple of Reed Warblers also. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birds #birdsSeenIn2026

Little Gull

Little Gull

Very pleased that the Little Gull decided to put in a reappearance at Sandy Water Park this afternoon having missed it earlier in the week. It tended to stick to the middle but the occasional close pass allowed me to get a few photos. #birdingWales #birdsSeenIn2026 #UKWildlife #birds

First Cuckoos call as spring migration picks up A brief flow of southerly air last week brought warm weather and an open door for summer migrant birds, although cold wind and rain over the weekend may lead some to question the wisdom of their...

This is my favourite time of year, each day bringing new birds and sounds I've missed over the last eight months.

The week's sightings in #NorthWales wrapped into @northwaleslive.bsky.social BirdNotes.

A close-up photograph captures a small, olive-brown willow warbler perched on a blossoming branch. The bird has a distinct pale eyebrow stripe and is looking toward the right, its feathers softly blending with the natural surroundings. It sits amidst delicate white flowers and budding green leaves.

Lovely to hear so many singing black caps after the hail on Saturday at aberthaw. Trying to get a pic of one was a bit challenging but I did see my first willow warbler of the year and managed a quick snap in some decent light.

Today is International Puffin Day, celebrating the arrival of Atlantic puffins back at their coastal breeding colonies and raising awareness for their conservation. Last year there were a record >43,000 puffins on Skomer Island, I can't wait to visit again! #BirdingWales

Thanks for the heads-up that the tagged Icelandic Merlin, that wintered around @bardseybirdobs.bsky.social and Uwchmynydd, made its first step north on Thursday and is now on @isleofmanofficial.bsky.social

The big debate of the weekend is still going on in the UK after RSPB's announcement to stop feeding birds seeds & nuts from May 1st till October 31st ~ I've decided to stop feeding them completely for the summer months ahead ~ I'm so going to miss all the birds visiting πŸ₯Ή πŸͺΆπŸ¦‰ #birdingWales #ukbirding

The local rooks and jackdaws have already helped themselves to twigs from my trees to build their nests, yesterday I was slightly surprised to find it was the crows' turn, as they rarely venture into the garden #BirdingWales #Birds

Willow Warbler

Willow Warbler

Popped up to Llyn Llech Owain on Wednesday eve where the highlight was a flock of 5 Redpoll feeding in willows. Most I’ve seen anywhere for a couple of years! Willow Warblers had arrived en masse with at least 20 in fine voice. Prob a gross underestimate. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birdsSeenIn2026

Scaup with a Tufted Duck behind.

Scaup with a Tufted Duck behind.

And here’s the Scaup. Nice views again with the occasional close approach. Good to see the Great Crested Grebe has found a companion and hear another singing Blackcap. Couple of Swallow about but didn’t feel very springlike being cold and breezy. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birds #birdsSeenIn2026
