Two curious, small, golden ants peer back at me from the damp soil.
A small golden ant faces the camera. The teeth on the mandibles can be seen (a diagnostic feature in some ant species).
The small eye of this subterranean species only has a few ommatidia. The golden pubescence shines on this ant in lateral view, making it look like it’s covered in velvet.
Some Yellow Meadow #ants (Lasius flavus) living under a rock on grass.
This is a hypogeic or subterranean species. Very small ~4mm long. They are covered in pubescence or fine hairs, which give them the look of golden velvet.

A small black ant stands guard over it’s herd of pink aphids.

On a break yesterday I checked the pear tree where the little Lasius niger #ants are farming some #aphids.
Using the #Laowa 100mm macro lens at it’s full 2x magnification it can resolve the individual ommatidia or eye sections in an ant only 5mm long.
