I had the joy of watching this little aphid wasp over the course of a couple weeks last June. So many trips gathering resin! I reared out the offspring of this tunnel over the past month: mostly Passaloecus cuspidatus with a few Omalus aeneus for good measure #hymenoptera #entomology #Alaska 🐝🧪

A screen grab of an acknowledgments section of a scientific paper, with a highlighted section reading, "The use of Special Kitty brand cat food in these experiments is in no way an endorsement of this product by the researchers or the University of Georgia."

A screen grab of an acknowledgments section of a scientific paper, with a highlighted section reading, "The use of Special Kitty brand cat food in these experiments is in no way an endorsement of this product by the researchers or the University of Georgia."

I love reading acknowledgments sections for their little bits of warmth and humor. This inexplicable "non-endorsement" of Special Kitty Cat Food, in a study which as far as I understand makes absolutely no use of cat food whatsoever, is truly 10/10. #entomology 🧪

A photo of a small dark black fly with an orange head and black eyes.

There's a new fly in town.

While out for a run yesterday, in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, I noticed this unusual orange-headed black fly. I uploaded my photos to #iNaturalist when I got home and learned that it's the Australian Soldier Fly, *Inopus rubriceps* […]

These ants RUN! Lasius brunneus are hard to photograph. Out of 100s of frames these are about OK. Avoiding motion blur only when they passed each other (too brief to be trophallaxis?).

A pretty little ant, known as the Brown Tree Ant, often found on old oaks.

So I picked up Insectopolis,a Natural History by Peter Kuper from the library. It was SOOOOO GOOD. Great balance of information about insects and humor. Also, some hilarious soul crushing dark humor is mixed in as well 💙📚

A pretty little 22 spot ladybird, Psyllobora vigintiduopunctata, from my garden today.

The weather is really nice today but I'm unfortunately sick and don't have the strength to go anywhere beyond my garden to look for bugs :(

A mayfly - Leptophlebia cupida, aka the early brown spinner.

This small mayfly visited me this morning; the dark forelegs and tiny hindwing suggest Leptophlebia cupida, aka the early brown spinner. They'll only live for a few days after emerging from their aquatic nypmh stage - just long enough to mate and lay eggs. #backyardnature #entomology
