"A Pseudoperga sp. sawfly stands guard over her brood. I had no idea sawflies displayed this sort of maternal behaviour. Photographed in Dandenong Ranges National Park, Victoria, Australia."

There's something in common here 😊
Sawfly larvae look like small yellow caterpillars with black speckles. Two larvae host on the seedpods of green false hellebore.
Larvae hosting on green false hellebore.
Green false hellebore is highly toxic and kills pretty much everything that decides to eat it, but a highly understudied sawfly species known as Rhadinoceraea nubilipennis is one of the few exceptions. These are presumed to be that. #bugsky #sawfly #swamps

Woolly Adler Sawfly Eriocampa ovata larva on Alder Alnus glutinosa leaf.
The unusual looking larvae of Alder Sawfly (Eriocampa ovata) supposedly resemble a bird-dropping. Seen at Barton Turf. #sawfly
This is a close-up photo of a small insect perched on a green plant stem. The insect has a shiny black head and thorax with long, straight antennae. Its wings are transparent with dark veins and folded back along its body. The abdomen is a distinct bright orange, creating a strong contrast against the darker front half. It has slender black legs gripping the green stem, with blurred green leaves and background providing a natural setting. This insect looks like a sawfly (order Hymenoptera, suborder Symphyta), which are related to wasps but lack the narrow “waist” typical of wasps and bees.
Dagger Moth caterpillar apparently

Something had been eating birch leaves and today we found the culprits. The Grey Dagger moth caterpillar might be incidental but the Hazel Sawfly are definitely guilty! #moth #sawfly 🇬🇧🌱
A photo taken looking down into a buttercup. It has a sawfly inside that is resting on its side tucked in between the petals and the anthers.
Wandering in the woods one evening we noticed that sawflies had tucked themselves in for the night inside buttercups. Something a little cute about them laying down on their side 🙂

Today I learned that there's such a thing as a pokeweed sawfly (Allantus basilaris). I clearly don't spend enough time around toxic plants. So obscure that I can't find a good photo of the tiny thing. Here's my crap one.
Believe these to be Nematus septentrionalis aka Hazel Sawfly. Humberhead Levels garden hedge.
Are there any #Sawfly #Symphyta experts able to confirm my thoughts that these are Nematus septentrionalis aka Hazel Sawfly in my #HumberheadLevels garden (mixed species hedge) this afternoon #Hymenoptera

'Red bean' #galls of #sawfly Euura proxima on leaves of crack willow (Salix fragilis) at Ditchingham, Norfolk, England. Larvae feed on leaf tissue in safety of galls during summer, before pupating in soil when leaves fall in autumn. Adults emerge in spring only to mate and lay eggs in fresh leaves.
I found a mating pair of #sawflies. As they were predisposed I managed a few shots.

These Solomon’s Seal #Sawfly larvae have almost completely eaten themselves out of their own home.
Yes, they look like caterpillars but really are larvae of sawfly, which is a type of #wasp in the order Hymenoptera (not Lepidoptera, like true #butterflies and #moths).
A green 'caterpillar' with a black line on its side and a pale orange head.
#Entomology #insect people - whose baby is this? My first thought was a sawfly but I'm really not sure. An odd lepidoptera caterpillar? A hover fly larva? Other? Manitoba, Canada. Today.

Here's the footage of the maybe #sawfly #larvae I found in my garden.
It is cute. I found it eating my succulents so I moved it to the weeds.
I only used my pixel 8 camera phone with a macro lens attachment. Not bad (same with my other videos).
