Lecanora barkmaniana : England : VC25 East Suffolk : TM4077 : March 2026 : On Prunus branch
Lecanora barkmaniana on bark near Holton, Suffolk, England. Only bare handful of records of this #lichen in Suffolk! But it's certainly more common than that. Historically overlooked due to confusion with very similar sorediate crusts. Distinguished by yellowish hue, and K+ and Pd+ yellow reactions.

Stop #lichenGBI press! Hugely excited to find endangered #lichen Anaptychia ciliaris, presumed extinct in Suffolk. Last county record 1985. In freefall in Britain for decades due to air pollution and tree loss. Only current known location in East Anglia, and indeed wider region. On oak near Holton.

Bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) in parkland near Pembroke Lodge, Richmond Park, London, April 2026
Normandina pulchella : England : VC17 Surrey : TQ1872 : April 2026 : On trunk of Sorbus aria
Delightful bluebells in Richmond Park, London, where I led more public #lichen walks and park-volunteer training this weekend. Always enjoyable, especially with finds like this one: delicate 'shells' of Normandina pulchella, a species more typical of western oceanic woods. On mossy whitebeam trunk.

Porpidia tuberculosa (top) and Myriospora smaragdula (bottom) on siliceous boulders in Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens, London. Common #lichens, but first park records, and indeed first record of M smaragdula for VC21 Middlesex. Found as part of my lichen walks there: exciting for public participants!

For many, ancient woodlands mean wildflowers, birds, insects. For me, they mean #lichens, #fungi, #algae and #slimemoulds! Trees are a constant of course. Identifications where possible in alt-text. All from a small ancient wood in Sheriffhales, Shropshire, England.

Blennothallia crispa : England : VC40 Shropshire : SJ7312 : February 2026 : On basic sandstone outcrop
Blennothallia crispa : England : VC40 Shropshire : SJ7312 : February 2026 : On basic sandstone outcrop : In water
2/2 …not chains confirm B crispa. Isidia also fit B crispa better: characteristically flattened, not globose and sometimes becoming flattened as in C flaccidum. #Lichen substrates may not always be as they immediately appear to be, due to seepage, dust, eutrophication or other environmental factors.

1/2 Blennothallia crispa on basic or calcareous-washed sandstone in disused quarry. Given acidic substrate, I might have assumed Collema flaccidum. But having seen other #lichens on quarry wall that also prefer basic/calcareous substrates, I took sample to check. Nostoc #cyanobacteria in clusters…
Slime mould : Myxogastria : VC40 Shropshire : SJ7312 : February 2026 : On rotting fallen twig
#Slimemoulds: whole world of weird! Free-living microscopic amoeboid creatures capable of fusing into large visible plasmodium, and acting as one to find food and especially to reproduce. This plasmodium is transitioning into reproductive stage. No idea of species. Sheriffhales, Shropshire, England.
Indeed, and some bacteria, including in digestive tract of termites. Nice point about geological history!

Wrinkled crust fungus (Phlebia radiata) : England : VC40 Shropshire : SJ7313 : February 2026 : On Prunus trunk
Splendid example of wrinkled crust (Phlebia radiata) on Prunus trunk, Sheriffhales, Shropshire, England. Fruit bodies of white-rot #fungus that's devouring tree from inside. One of few types of organism on Earth capable of consuming wood (lignin) as food, without which we'd be buried in dead trees!

Continuing 'not-quite-nationally-scarce' #lichen theme below. Lecanora argentata: previously much confused with L chlarotera, but now better recorded. In fact, no longer considered (technically) scarce! Differs from L chlarotera in lack of POL+ crystals in epithecium. Burlton, Shropshire, England.
Coniocarpon cinnabarinum growing in Gosbeck Wood, Suffolk. This species is commonly recorded growing on smooth barked trees. The lichen is widespread in the west of the UK but rare in the east. This record is a county first for Suffolk (either Vice County)! #lichens #Suffolk

Yet another 'nationally scarce' #lichen that's probably common: Alyxoria viridipruinosa. New to science in 2011 (from Suffolk!) and likely hiding in past records of A varia, its look-alike and common cousin. K+ yellow pruina and thallus (in section) are diagnostic. Burlton, Shropshire, England.
2/2 …type and chemical tests would help. And in any case, I suspect it might need microscopic confirmation. It would be interesting to hear what @robyaxley.bsky.social thinks: he's had some training in aquatic lichens, and he may have seen something similar close by an upland stream as yours was.
1/2 Thanks, Vanna and @mothman60.bsky.social. Graham: at first glance, your lichen puts me in mind of Bacidia, with its white prothallus; green, warty thallus; biatorine apothecia. But even if that's right direction (which it may not be!), it's very difficult genus. More information, such as stone…

Another 'nationally scarce' #lichen that's probably common: Kuettlingeria (Caloplaca) albolutescens. Easily mistaken for K teicholyta, which is consequently much over-recorded. Distinguished by thinner, more powdery thallus lacking placodioid (scalloped, lobed) edge. Mettingham, Suffolk, England.

Lecania inundata : England : VC25 East Suffolk : TM337894 : February 2026 : On terracotta pot : In water
Lecania inundata on terracotta pot. 'Nationally scarce' but really just part of confusing #lichen group usually recorded pragmatically as 'L erysibe sens lat'. Easily mistaken for L erysibe, but lacks blastidia (type of vegetative propagule) and has slightly larger spores. Bungay, Suffolk, England.
Thanks, Vanna and @ians4ad.bsky.social. Yes, @scottishecologist.bsky.social: that's Ophioparma ventosa. Nice one!
