The garden is coming to life! Just saw and missed my first Dark Edged #Beefly (Bombylius major). However did catch a lovely Eupeodes luniger #Hoverfly on the pear blossom.

A plump, fuzzy fly; mostly dark chocolate brown with a white collar and a silver-white 'waist'. The long wings are banded and spotted with dark brown. A long, straight proboscis sticks out the front of its head.

Another spring milestone passed... the first bee fly of the year! This handsome one is the Pygmy Bee Fly, a close relative of (you guessed it!) the Greater, or Large Bee Fly. The larvae of these cute fellas are parasitoids of solitary bees. #Diptera #Bombyliidae

A plump, fuzzy bee fly sits on a dead pine needle on the ground. It has a white face and rump, and maroon eyes, but the rest of the body is black, with half black wings.

A gray and black peacock fly. It's holding its wings upright, with their undersides showing forward. The wings are spotted, and the fly looks like a peacock.

A small, elongate fly with small mirror patches on it. It has huge red eyes making up most of the head. It's resting on a leaf.

An extraordinarily thin black crane fly. The thin wings are also wrapped around the body, giving it a stick-like appearance. It has pale legs with dark knees.
