Nephrotoma suturalis Nephrotoma suturalis from Zolfo Springs, FL, USA on November 16, 2017 at 09:27 AM by Colin Purrington

Finally got an ID (thank you Stephen Luk) for a crane fly I photographed eight years ago in Florida: Nephrotoma suturalis suturalis. The subspecies determination is due, in part, to the black-tipped femurs. #insect #diptera #tipulidae #flies #macro #inaturalist www.inaturalist.org/observations...

A large spider in the process of wrapping a crane fly in silk for eating later in the day.

It’s that time of year again. The #Tipulidae ( #craneflies ) are out in large numbers and those big Araneus diadematus orb weaver #spiders are setting webs to catch them.

It’s a battlefield out in the garden!

I sometimes appreciate a fly when out on a survey, wet woodland yielded the rather nicely marked Ctenophora pectinicornis earlier today. #Diptera #Tipulidae Excuse the dirty finger nails, too busy picking small stuff out of pond ooze!

Cranefly sitting on grass

Cranefly sitting on grass

Yesterday morning was frosty, but with a clear sky. So a long walk with the dog was in order.
Brought the camera and got some good #insect photos. Here is a #tipulidae.

A detailed macro photo of a crane fly resting on a white synthetic surface with a fine crosshatch texture. The crane fly is viewed from above, showcasing its long legs, narrow body, and delicate, translucent wings marked with intricate dark veining. The insect's body is warm brown with slight iridescence on the wings. Its legs are extremely long and slender, bent at sharp angles. The head is small relative to the body, with short antennae and dark compound eyes just visible. The image is well-lit and crisp, capturing the structural detail of both the insect and the background

An extreme close-up of the crane fly’s head and thorax. The compound eye is prominently featured, dark green with a finely faceted texture. The yellow-brown exoskeleton of the thorax is visible with segmented detail, giving a view of its internal structure through the translucent surface. Fine hairs and antennae are also in frame, and one leg crosses dramatically through the image. The background is out of focus, providing contrast that emphasizes the crisp anatomy of the insect. Lighting is diffuse, bringing out the texture and subtle coloration.

Poor crane flies. Because they look like giant mosquitoes, people panic. They can be incidental pollinators, and some adults do sip nectar when they feed. They're harmless and do not bite or sting. This one came to the light trap, likely Nephrotoma sp.

𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗘𝗻𝗴): We see this colorful crane fly sitting with its long limbs on a plant that in English is commonly known as cleavers, among other many names, and that is about to bloom. The general tone of the photograph is green, because of the wild plants, but the crane fly has a yellow body with black spots, and it also has black compound eyes and long legs.

A detailed macro photo of two Symplecta cana crane flies perched on a synthetic mesh surface. The primary subject is centered with long, slender legs and translucent, iridescent wings folded over its back. Just behind the wings, two yellow, knob-like halteres are visible, used for balance during flight. Another crane fly rests below it, its head and legs overlapping slightly with the first. The mesh backdrop creates a repeating pattern with light reflections adding a dreamy bokeh effect.

A single Symplecta cana crane fly perched against a woven mesh background. Its delicate wings shimmer with rainbow iridescence, and yellow halteres are clearly visible near the base of the wings. The insect’s long legs stretch outward from its slender body, and the textured mesh surface softly reflects light in the background.

Everyone's off chasing moths at the light trap while I admire these Symplecta sp. Diptera need more love. I wouldn’t touch their taxonomy, entomology hardmode. If someone says they work on flies, that's immediate respect. One of the toughest insect groups out there.🌿 #bugsky #Invertebrate #Tipulidae

Macro photo of a 4mm long red mite feeding on an insect larva in a bed of moss.

A big mite (4mm!) feeding(?) on a crane fly(?) larva. Calyptostoma specifically parasitise crane flies - young mites cling to adult crane flies; adults feed on crane fly larvae. Could that be what's going on here?

A mating pair of orange/brown craneflies. The photo angle is lateral and the male is pointing up, the female pointing down, with only their genitals touching (I couldn't think of a better way to phrase this, sorry). The male has a more consistent orange/brown body very long antennae. The female is bulkier in general but with more black along her body. Both have very long legs that don't fit into the frame of the photo.

These #Tipulidae craneflies must surely be some of the longest of our #Tasmanian endemic #fly species. The legs were way too long to fit into the frame.
