BREAKING: Along with @lawyerscomm.bsky.social we sued DHS and ICE for refusing to disclose how they're using facial recognition apps to surveil the public.

The agencies ignored legal deadlines and produced zero records.

BREAKING: In a sharp turnaround, Trump and House Republicans, who condemned this same funding from the Senate last week, have agreed to the Democratic House plan to fund DHS through Sept. 30 while omitting money for Trump’s ICE immigration crackdown.

To catch you up: today Trump demanded a reconciliation bill on his desk by June 1st. Trump and Republicans will be pushing for 3 wars in this bill:
1. Iran war funding
2. A war on our communities through ICE funding
3. A war on our health, food, housing through service cuts to pay for the first two

ICE‑related chase spans 2 Mass. towns, ends with crash and suspects fleeing, police say Police say two people in a van struck an agent‑occupied vehicle during an attempted traffic stop, prompting a pursuit.

Great job by ICE, ignoring basic safety standards, going on a dangerous high-speed chase that resulted in a crash, and still failing to arrest the people they were after 👍

Republican leaders announce two-track plan to end the DHS shutdown The proposal still needs to pass Congress. It's unclear when votes will take place, while members are outside of Washington for a two-week Passover and Easter recess.

🚨🚨 Republican leaders announce two-track plan to end the DHS shutdown

Joint Johnson & Thune statement implies Congress will proceed on last week's Senate path: fund DHS minus ICE/CBP, then ICE/CBP in reconciliation

My joint statement with @LeaderJohnThune
 on DHS funding:

We appreciate and share the President’s determination to once and for all bring an end to the Democrat DHS shutdown.

In the coming days, Republicans in the Senate and House will be following through on the President’s directive by fully funding the entire Department of Homeland Security on two parallel tracks: through the appropriations process and through the reconciliation process.

We appreciate that Senator Graham and the Senate Budget Committee have already initiated the process of developing a budget resolution that will ensure border security and immigration enforcement will be funded for the balance of the Trump Administration and insulated from future attempts by the Democrats to defund those agencies.

We operated under a belief that while our country is in the midst of an international armed conflict, Democrats might finally come to their senses and understand that defunding our homeland security agencies is beyond reckless and very dangerous. While we hoped they would accept the 60-day CR to fund the Department entirely so that bipartisan negotiations could continue, it is now abundantly clear that Democrats place allegiance to their radical left-wing base above all else — including their own power of the purse — which means open borders and protecting criminal illegal aliens. That is not acceptable to Republicans in Congress, nor is it to the American people. We cannot allow Democrats to any longer put the safety of the American public at risk through their open border policies, so we are taking that off the table.

In following this two-track approach, the Republican Congress will fully reopen the Department, make sure all federal workers are paid, and specifically fund immigration enforcement and border security for the next three years so that those law-enforcement activities can continue uninhibited. In return, Democrats will once again demonstrate to the American people their support for open borders and keeping criminal illegal immigrants in America.

🚨 Johnson backed down.
Read between the lines, they're going to pass the Senate bill and try to fund ICE and CBP in reconciliation, which is going to be a mess. If they fail, I wouldn't expect any ICE/CBP funding for the next 3 years.

Speaker Johnson submits on DHS funding. Senate will repass the funding bill that excluded ICE & CBP then send to House for a vote. Republicans will then attempt a reconciliation bill to dump even more billions into ICE & CBP. This is going to be another blow to Republicans in Nov

Entered the JFK Airport and walked right into two ICE agents and then got into the longest security line I’ve been in in a long time. It’s chaos here.

Thankfully, I allotted two hours for this security theater. I’m reminded of my graphic novel LaGuardia, which is more relevant than ever.

House will pass the Senate bill -- remember, the bill that JOHNSON and House Republicans dumped all over for a week.
Then they want *3 years* of ICE/CBP funding in reconciliation.

ICE already has enough to run at double capacity through the end of the Trump admin even if it never gets another cent because of the funding from OBBBA (CBP would run out this year).

So “3 years of funding in reconciliation” means at least triple ICE capacity through the end of the Trump admin.

Thune and Johnson put out a joint statement saying they will fund DHS and reopen it and then later address the ICE/CBP funding in a reconciliation bill.

That’s basically what the plan was last Friday when House Republicans refused to get onboard and instead voted on a CR.

If Republicans succeed at getting a 3 year ICE/CBP budget reconciliation passed AFTER cutting ACA subsidies because they "needed the money" for ICE/CBP it will be a clear message about the priorities of the parties.

There's a big ol' chart to check out.
Maybe they'll want ICE to stick around?

The Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan bill to fund TSA, but House Republicans refused to hold a vote on it.

I'm glad TSA agents are finally being paid, but we need a permanent solution. It's time to fund TSA immediately so Congress can negotiate needed reforms to ICE + CBP.

Ladies and gents, may I introduce you to the extremely elusive, rarely observed ice beluga! It can only be seen in these parts around the end of March and the beginning of April.
