A tiny black spider which legs have a soft orange hue. Its whole body shimmers as it reflects the sunlight.
Same spider. Dorsal view (like previous image).
The original picture. Shows spider in 'distance'.
The world is a lot right now.
But, to my delight, I managed to encounter someone new the other day!
Excuse the low quality, the spider was very tiny and wouldn't hold still. The pictures are zoomed in too.
It appeared to be an ant mimicking spider (but unsure).

A caterpillar of unknown species found on the pavement and brought home to feed and hopefully pupate in soil. Dark brown head and lighter brown body. It's slightly curled, head to left, tail at the right. OM1ii 60mm stacked image.
The glorious bright yellow Dandelion much reviled as a weed by many but adored by those who appreiate its beauty and that it provides essential food for early nectaring insects OM1ii 90mm +x2 extender stacked image
Bombilious Major, Dark Bordered Beefly. Fluffy brown body, big brown eyes close together, long straight proboscis, wings open with dark pattern to upper border - hence the name. This is the first and so far only, Beefly in my jungle this year. It's resting on a stone sun bathing. OM1ii
AN AWFUL shot. TG5 was only camera with a built in flash and working batteries. Not really the best for this job, FZ1K now has a battery! Centre left half a large plant pot which is the Hedgehog feeding station. One HH is inside and to the right is a second HH moving away. The plant is self seeded Gallium, food plant for Hummingbird Hawk Moth.

Three fat lilac buds are dusted with a number of tiny black cylindrical insects that have abdominal stripes and three dorsal spots.
I noticed a bunch of what I think are thrips on these swelling lilac buds when I walked by the other day. I'd love to know if anybody has any information because I don't know how to feel about them. I'm prejudiced against thrips because of the indoor plant pest species. #Inverts π±πΏ

SOMETHING IS FINALLY USING THE NATIVE WILLOWS I PLANTED FOR POLLINATORS!

Oh, it's a honeybee. Well, at least the pollen isn't being wasted.

#Bees #Inverts #Butterflies Not just Bees but many creatures rely on Dandelions
I don't love that livestock forage in my yard & compete with the native bees I'm trying to support.
HOWEVER since we depend on honeybees for many crops but live in pollination deserts, this is a big time breakthrough. They engineered YEAST to replicate missing nutrients from pollen.

photo of a somewhat fresh spider egg sac attached to a decorative holly bush. the egg sac is cream silk with a light brown/orange line bisecting it inside the sac. there are small unidentified hunks of white debris incorporated into the sac and the few stands of silk attaching it to the leaves.
photo of the egg sac in my hand to show the bottom, which has an accumulation of orangish mystery stuff as well as a darkening inside that I'm assuming is developing eggs.
photo of about 20 tiny spiderlings dispersing on silk strands that converge on a broken branch of a holly bush. the spiderlings are light orange with a large cream-colored abdomen that has a large black spot. they are very blurry as they are small and moving.
second photo of about 8 tiny spiderlings dispersing on silk strands that converge on a (different) broken branch of a holly bush. the spiderlings are light orange with a large cream-colored abdomen that has a large black spot. they are very blurry as they are small and moving.
i found this egg sac last November and wondered what it was all winter. two days ago, i noticed it getting dark with the warmer weather. then today: babies! ~200 or so orbweaver spiderlings dispersing across my yard π₯°

Headington Action kindly funded a survey of spiders and other invertebrates in the Valley. 506 invertebrate species in total, 83 species of spiders, one Nationally rare beetle, and seven Nationally Scarce other invertebrates. Link to report below.

Three photos in one of a sock on a mannequin leg in different angles. It is blue with a yellow heel and toes. There are three trilobites on the sides of the sock.
Have you seen the sock samples in the recent update of the Ancient Arthropods project? π
The trilobites are now done! A much simpler design for those who don't like clutter
