A macro photograph of a hoverfly on grass. It looks as if it is looking up at the camera with his big eyes. He’s a long hoverfly, but not particularly big. The front of his face is light yellow, then there are two huge eyes. His thorax is bronze with faint darker stripes and yellow on the sides. His body is black with pairs of yellow dots. His wings are spread out to the sides, clear but with some iridescence.

Great to see these guys coming out again. I saw four hanging out on some dandelion today

"your cactus is blooming" said the wife. I had bought one of those cheap barrel cacti that sell for a buck after they have been sitting too long in the grocery store a few months back. Stuck it by the back window and did nothing. Wish all plants were this easy.

These ants RUN! Lasius brunneus are hard to photograph. Out of 100s of frames these are about OK. Avoiding motion blur only when they passed each other (too brief to be trophallaxis?).

A photo of a dappled green and gray mantid's face. The mantid has slender gray antennae which extend towards the viewer. Between the antennae are three clear ocelli, primitive eyes, in an inverted triangle pattern. Next to the antennae are large mottled gray and black eyes. The mantid's body is dappled green and gray, colors very much like the lichen which covers the tree limbs in this area (South Georgia). The mantid's raptorial arms and body are outside of the plane of focus in this image.
