Coastal Resilience at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge - U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (.gov) On the eastern edge of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Dagger Point faces a relentless challenge: wave energy sweeping across San Antonio Bay, amplified by storm surges and hurricanes. According to Felipe Prieto, a Wildlife Refuge Specialist at Aransas, this dynamic force has, over decades, carved away the shoreline, toppling trees and scouring away the marshes that once buffered the coast. Hurricane Harvey alone claimed nearly 40 feet of shoreline in 2017. Without intervention, this erosion threatens not only thousands of acres of habitat but also critical infrastructure like visitor trails, viewing platforms, and access roads, along with the ecological integrity of one of Texas’ most treasured coastal landscapes. The Dagger Point Coastal and Marine Protection and Restoration Project To address this urgent need, Aransas NWR, in partnership with the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program and other conservation leaders, launched the Dagger Point Coastal and Marine Protection and Restoration Project. I haven’t ever done the Coast to Coast walk but I have been to many places along it as it passes through the LakeDistrict, Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors. This is the start at St Bees on a cold autumn day.

The Coast to Coast walk, first described by Alfred Wainwright in 1973, has today been made a National Trail. 🥾

It is a steep and difficult climb, as the pebbles keep moving, to get on to the beach at this point but it is worth it for the stunning view.

Look Out for Nesting Coastal Birds on Bay Area Beaches Beach-nesting and other coastal birds have begun laying eggs along Florida's coasts and on rooftops in coastal areas. Spring and summer mark critical times of year for these vulnerable species, as they must try to find safe habitats away from human disturbance, storms, and predators to successfully raise their babies. While wading birds nest in coastal trees, sea and shorebirds lay their eggs right on the sand. If they can’t find suitable beach habitat, some birds resort to nesting on large, gravel rooftops. Tampa Bay area threatened species, in particular the American Oystercatcher, Least Tern, and Black Skimmer, perceive people as a threat and will take flight whenever beachgoers or their dogs approach nesting areas too closely. “Excess disturbance by people, their dogs, and beach toys can heavily impact an entire breeding season for beach-nesting birds,” says Kara Durda, Tampa Bay Area Shorebird Program Manager. Because these threatened species nest directly on the sand and shell shoreline, beachgoers and boaters need to heed nesting signage and avoid areas posted as "no trespassing," even if they don't notice any birds. Informational signs, along with string and flagging, are being installed in several locations in the Tampa Bay area to alert beachgoers...
