I just uploaded my 1000th observation on @inaturalist.bsky.social and am approaching ten years since my first! Since then, I've lived in 5 different states. Much has changed, but one constant is my love for connecting with my environment through learning about the life I share it with. #inaturalist

Had the first Black and White Tiger Moth (Ardices glatignyi) of the season visit our Perth Hills garden last night.
These lovely moths can be seen around Australia in autumn and winter but are more commonly seen in southern parts

Scott published some of his own works in his own “vanity press,” Thistlewords Press, including a remarkable naturalist’s narrative about a year of nature observations—at least one observation for 365 straight days (Following the Earth Around). All of which were uploaded to #iNaturalist, to which […]
An extremely close-up photo of a tiny snail on a leaf, next to a water droplet. The snails' shell is a bit ovoid, and mottled with spots of different shades of brown. Its body is mostly pale and translucent, and its eyestalks are dark.
Another cute little snail, probably part of a group called ambersnails. So tiny.

A Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) spotted at Kuala Sepetang, Perak, Malaysia on 3 April 2026. It perched on this nearby pillar in the river, letting me get shots of it.

The City Nature Challenge is fast approaching. That's four days in our cities to find as many species as we can and get as many people out observing nature.
The four day observing period this year is 24–27 April (Friday–Monday), followed by two weeks of uploading and identifying.
This will the […]

Abantiades hydrographus - Western Rain Moth
Autumn rain and storms overnight brought this stunning Rain Moth to our Perth Hills moth light.
She was big, ~80mm in length, and so beautiful! Such an honour to see these amazing moths.

Photo of a hummingbird hovering next to a coral tree flower, which has long red spikes that the hummingbird is feeding from.
Another photo of the same hummingbird and flower, now poking its beak into the flower spike.
Always loved the long red spiky flowers of the coral trees here in Mexico and thought "I bet hummingbirds are into it". Got lucky and caught one in the act 🌺🐦

A white bird with black markings starting at the eye and extending to the back of the neck. Its beak is black, short and sharp. It is flying over the surface of the river. The outer edges of the wings are darkened. In this shot, the wings are stretched upwards and slightly swept back.
In this shot, the wings are now horizontal to the body, with the edge of the wings swept back more.
In this shot, both wings are now below the body. The left wing is further down compared to the right wing.
In this shot, both wings are now stretched out below the body.

Top view of a moth with forewings that are generally black with a large band of brown across the middle and various patches of raised tufts that appear white. The moth is around 15mm in length
Mystery moth...🔍🦋
We spotted this moth in March 2025.
Even though it's quite striking with those lovely white wing tufts, I haven't yet been able to ID it. So if anyone has any suggestions on what it might be... let me know

There's a new project on #iNaturalist called 'Swifts Come Back':
• This #project is aimed at gathering first sightings of #swifts returning from #migration.
NYC, by 13Apr’26, has yet to record a #migrant on either #iNat or #eBird.

An animal with brown fur clinging to the side of the tree with its limbs, facing upwards. A flap of skin stretches from the tips of the hands to the toes of the legs.
In this image, the colugo has turned its head to the side to groom its lower back.
Here, the colugo has moved to the other side of the tree and has turned its head to look at the camera sideways. it's mouth is open in a yawn.
The colugo has turned its head to look directly at the camera, showing its large eyes.

Side view of a brown weevil with a long snout. At the back, you can see a tiny Pseudoscorpion hanging into the weevil’s leg
Here’s the Cycad Weevil (Tranes vigorsii) that the Pseudoscorpion hitched a lift with… you can just see it hanging onto the weevil’s back left leg.
The weevil seemed pretty unconcerned by his passenger.

A reddish brown branch of a tree features a tangle of stringy, pale, sea green lichen with little intricate lacy bits that hold onto sparkly raindrops. There’s a tangle of blurred-out reddish brown branches and green foliage and moss in the background.

A very close-up image of two termites in reddish chewed-up wood, with a third termite appearing near the bottom of the frame. The central termite has a tiny white arthropod on its back, a springtail, which is dwarfed by the termite.
A very cool find! I spotted this termite (Zootermopsis spp.) with a little springtail (Cheirotoma spp.) riding on its back. Apparently Cheirotoma are known hitchhikers on termites.

A bird with a black head and upper breast, a red-bill with a black tip. It has red skin in front of the eyes, and a white patch on the ears. A photo of a stylish fly sitting on a leaf. It's a mostly black fly with orange legs, a black and yellow striped thorax, and a black abdomen with two large bright yellow blotches on it.
Of the flies I saw today, this one is my favourite. It's the ngaro tara or three-lined Hover Fly (*Helophilus seelandicus*), a New Zealand endemic species.
I like the sleek colour pattern. It would not look out of place on a coverable sports car.
