The buffleheads in this photo - the male one with the large white patches on its head, shoulders, and tail - and the two other birds with smaller white splashes on their heads and wings - had just taken off when I snapped this photo. You can see the splashes in the water behind them that show where they started to lift off. The bright orange feet of the male are dangling below its body, as if the bird had not yet retracted its landing gear. As the hashtags say, this is an action shot. That means it is not as in-focus as it might be.

I took this photo before I had my fancier telephoto lens. Not that I blame my equipment, but this is not a bad shot given the dim light and unprofessional tools. Anyway, usually when I see black-bellied plovers, they are far away standing on a beach. In this case, I did start off seeing/photographing this one with both scrawny feet in the sand. There did seem to be something special about the bird, but it was not until it took off that I noticed how beautiful it was. In flight, the bird's striking tail displays a kind of a moire pattern as it floats above its pointed toes. The bird wears what looks like a British barrister's white wig on its head and draping down its shoulders, over a black belly, body, and face. Its long pointy wings are both raised above the bird's body.

Of all the many colorful waterbirds, blue winged teal might be the ones that I admire most. I like the way they use their males use their white feathers to set off their slightly up-curved beaks and their mottled brown bodies and the black tips of their folded wings. I like how the female blue-winged teal echoes the shape and colorings of the male, but with much more subtle flourishes. I photographed this pair as their paraded around the periphery of one of the ponds at Palo Alto Baylands in their usual stately manner.

A small bird with a slate-blue back, a white face and underside, a black cap, and a rufous patch under its rump seems to hang in space next to a tree trunk. A seed is clutched in its beak, and its climbing claws are millimeters away from the tree, presumably in mid-hop. The bird is partially obscured by a twig.
I could wish that I were closer. I could wish that the twig wasn't in the way. But this is still a very fun shot of a white-breasted nuthatch, and I'm honestly quite pleased with it. :3

There are some places where you are pretty much guaranteed to see birds, and you are likely to find them in predictable areas of that place. The Arboretum is like that. You always see beautiful hummingbirds there. You always see quail there. So here is a beautiful male quail. It's plume is standing straight up on its head. Its lovely blue-grey tail is pointing right at us. It's brown wings are edged with ivory and are folded on its back. We can see a little bit of the left side of its head - black, white, and a little bit of its eye. The rest of his family was there with their dad, but they were camera-shy.

We often see Brant's Geese hanging around in small groups on the beach. But on this day, something must have scared them and they all took flight, showing us the zigzagging streak of white at the very back of their tails. As is often the case with groups of birds in flight, their wings are in various positions. We are able to see a little of the face of one of the birds, but the others were singularly focused on getting out of Dodge.
