A male mallard raises its head while foraging for nutrients in St. Vrain Creek in Longmont, Colorado. In this horizontal color photograph, the duck swims upstream, shown in left profile with its hind end cropped out of the frame. Beaded water droplets cling to its head, and a strand of vegetation dangles from its beak into the flowing water. Sunlight catches the scene, making everything glisten, while the mallard’s iridescent green head and bright yellow bill stand out vividly.
Mallards are dabbling ducks that primarily feed on aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates such as insects and worms. They tip forward and submerge their heads, using their bills to sift through mud and shallow water in search of food.
