Always loved the long red spiky flowers of the coral trees here in Mexico and thought "I bet hummingbirds are into it". Got lucky and caught one in the act 🌺🐦

Male rufous hummingbird being measured for a leg band

Yesterday I attended a Nature Trust event that included the banding of newly arrived hummingbirds. Here a male rufous is being measured whilst in a “straight jacket” made from blue shop paper towel strips. #hummingbirds

As soon as I lament that there hasn’t been many video captures, these #hummingbirds said “Hold my beer” and stopped on by 😍 Thank you Nature 🥰

Last year's visitor, a Broadtailed Hummingbird [Selasphorus platycercus] female was perched on the stem of a bright red Crocosmia crocosmiiflora in full bloom. The female is facing the camera showing her bright rusting colored breast with white speckled throat, feeding on the nectar of the flowers. Long green narrow leaves poke up all around behind her. Purple and greens from neighboring flowers and plants color the background. #PronghornWildlifePhotography @ Property of Barbara Magnuson and Larry Kimball

Here at 8300 ft elevation in Colorado, the first hummingbird, a Broad-tailed arrived 3 days ago on April 9th, 2 weeks earlier than the norm. With the full flowers in bloom, this was last year's visitor. #Birds #Hummingbirds #WildlifePhotography #BroadtailedHummingbirds #climatechange #wildlife 🪶🕊️

One of the nice things about photography in the rain is that you get great light on your subject like the downpour in which I shot this Violet Sabrewing in #CostaRica.

Male Anna’s hummingbird balances on his right leg while he scratches the side of his head with his left. His gorget is bright fuchsia and his crown is black and sticking up. He has shiny green feathers over a white base. The background is green and blue, out of focus.

The neck feathers are iridescent and only present the visible violet color when they catch the sun at a specific angle. The iridescence does not stem from pigment but rather nanometer size features in the structure of the feathers. Nature's nanotechnology!

Kitchen Hummingbird Nest, Day 3. She's been bringing bits of fluff back, presumably to make her nest ultra comfy. We are having rain the next few days, so hopefully her nest will survive! She added a leaf into the nest - it'll catch wind, I'm not sure it was a good idea! #birds #hummingbirds

A quiet stillness rises in open air.
Petals lean toward the light.
A soft moment settles between branches.
Spring moves through the trees.
And for a moment, you feel held by the season.

How Hummingbirds Perform Impossible Looking Aerial Moves Hummingbirds can fly upside down, spin in the air, and even fly backward thanks to their incredible wings that rotate 180 degrees.

"Hummingbirds are known for their fast wingbeats and the ability to hover and even fly backwards. This is due to their extremely mobile shoulder joints, which give their wings 180-degree mobility, as well as their strong chest muscles."
