Virginia has joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would obviate the electoral college once enough states sign on to amount to 270 electoral votes. Virginia brings the total to 222. Only 3 or 4 more large states are needed.

Virginia just ratified the interstate compact to ensure popular votes elect presidents, which means it has 222 of the 270 electoral votes it needs to come into effect. This is one of the reasons we'll have to reform the SCOTUS. The court as constituted will never let the compact stand.

The states are spaced out enough to accommodate the changes in size but retain their general shapes and relative positions on the map. Members have 222 electoral votes, potential states have 68, and the unlikely states have 248. The compact would only activate once states with at least 270 electoral votes have joined.
