Anhinga, back to the sun, wings open wide. Black bodied bird, light brown to beige neck, yellow patch at eyes and pale yellow long sharp beak. Outstanding and distinctive white stripes, very geometrical, on it's wing-backs. Unusual spot, standing with the lower portion of its body in the water. Most often found fully out of the water, or all the way in searching for tasty snackerals. Odd seeing a partial sun bath from the belly button down....
Shot into the morning sun, this image shows a number of Black Vultures on the tops of dead palm trees. The sun flare has caused some unintended lens flare effects, a small ball of transparent yellow and a ball of transparent pink can be seen as well as flared rays off the sun. The trees and birds on top are all black and stand in stark contrast against a brilliant blue sky. The birds are all medium body size and are all black with featherless leathery heads, wrinkled and gray. There are eight black vultures in this frame, six of which are holding their wings wide catching the morning warmth of the central Florida sun.
Great Blue Heron, captured adjusting the nest materials. Wings held open wide for balance as it attempts to get that last little stick placed just-so. Head down, keeping a close eye on the stick placement. Largest of waders, this bird is mostly a gray-blue coloration with black ovals on side of neck, and black pattern with white oval on top of head, almost like typical male pattern baldness. The lighting for this shot was well into sunset, the bird and the cypress tress behind it are all bathed in a golden glow, affected the usual colors seen.
Roseate Spoonbill, actually a young example. Short bill, feathers and colors still coming in. This Teaspoon is standing with both wings wide open and stretched well above its back as it adjusts it's position in the family nest. Spoonbill parent and sibling are seen to it's left, with another adult in softer focus well back in the image. These birds are mostly a coral pink - to - red coloration with white under neck and body. Bright orange bill, the long flat style ending in a large round ladle, or spoon shape. This little one shows the round spoon coming on, but the length of bill has barely started.
Rob's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #WingsOpenNotFlying; any bird with it's wings open but not in flight, the Alt Theme is #Eating, any bird with food in it's beak.
