Scientists Unlock 3 Million Years of Climate Secrets Hidden in Antarctic Ice Ancient Antarctic ice is revealing a more detailed and unexpected picture of Earth’s climate history. New research on ancient Antarctic ice and the air trapped within it is extending the timeline of Earth’s climate history and offering new insight into how the planet has evolved over the past 3 million years. The results, published in two Nature papers, indicate that Earth’s long-term cooling during this period occurred alongside only a modest drop in heat-trapping greenhouse gases. Scientists have long known that Earth was significantly warmer about 3 million years ago, with much higher sea levels. Evidence includes discoveries made more than a century ago of temperate and subtropical forest fossils in Alaska and Greenland, along with ancient shoreline deposits stretching from Georgia to Virginia. However, the reasons behind that warmth, and the cooling that followed, have remained uncertain. One major challenge has been reconstructing accurate records of global temperatures and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations from that time. Exploring Earth’s Oldest Ice The new studies were led by researchers from the National Science Foundation Center for Oldest Ice Exploration, a nationwide effort based at Oregon State University that focuses on finding Antarctica’s oldest ice. The research teams, led by Julia Marks-Peterson,...

#Antarctic sea ice extent reached its annual minimum in late February (16th lowest on record in the satellite era). This was mostly due to strong winds in the Weddell Sea region pushing the ice equatorward, which is reflected in March's ice concentration field

Global Warming Surges, Antarctic Seas Bubble - Pressenza - International Press Agency Global warming is on a very ominous trend that has never happened throughout human history, according to a recent study in Geophysical Research Letters. The rate of global warming has doubled in only ten years. This rapid rate, outside of the influence of nature alone, should be unsustainable for any mass the size of Earth. However, if it is sustainable, danger signals today will be catastrophic results tomorrow. Indeed, new discoveries in the Antarctic region are cause for concern about additional acceleration of global warming. “The warming trend nearly doubled after 2014,” study co-author Stefan Rahmstorf, head of Earth system analysis at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany, told Live Science in an email. “The acceleration of the global warming rate means we will cross the 1.5°C [2.7 degrees Fahrenheit] limit earlier,” he said, adding that they were surprised by the drastic surge as the warming trend nearly doubled after 2014. (Source: The Rate of Global Warming has Accelerated More in the Past Decade Than Ever Before, LiveScience, d/d March 7, 2026) Antarctic Seas Top-level scientists may be “surprised by the drastic surge” in global warming over the past decade, but even that surge may be about...

Researchers Uncover Hidden Genetic World Beneath Antarctic Seas A sweeping genetic survey of Antarctic waters reveals a hidden microbial world with untold influence on Earth’s climate. The ocean surrounding Antarctica may look remote and empty, but it quietly helps regulate the planet’s climate. This region, known as the Southern Ocean, absorbs enormous amounts of heat and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Much of that work is carried out by plankton, microscopic organisms that drift with ocean currents yet play a central role in Earth’s carbon balance. A new study published March 9 in Nature Communications offers one of the most detailed looks yet at the genetic makeup of these organisms. By mapping their DNA, scientists are beginning to uncover how this hidden ecosystem functions and why it matters for the future of the climate. The research is based on nearly ten years of work led by biogeochemist Nicolas Cassar of Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, alongside an international team. Their goal was to better understand how microbial life in one of the harshest environments on Earth influences global systems. “The Southern Ocean is massive and plays a disproportionate role in terms of heat and carbon uptake from the atmosphere,” Cassar said. “We wanted to better understand...

Antarctic penguin species appears on WA beach in rare sighting A king penguin from the sub-Antarctic region has been found more than 4,000 kilometres away from home on a remote beach on Western Australia's south coast. Esperance Wildlife Hospital was alerted by campers on Quagi Beach, almost 700km from Perth, to the penguin on shore. Rescuer and wildlife carer Lori-Ann Shibish said it was not uncommon for smaller penguin species to lose their way and end up on that stretch of coastline. "I just assumed it was going to be a little penguin," she said. "When we got there, we weren't ready for what we found." Having previously been to Antarctica for a research expedition, Ms Shibish instantly recognised it was a king penguin. King penguins are the second-largest penguin species and live in ice-free parts of the sub-Antarctic region. The region is home to remote Australian territories McDonald Island, Macquarie Island, and Heard Island. In 2025, a deadly strain of avian influenza, commonly referred to as "bird flu", was confirmed on Heard Island. Ms Shibish said there had been an alert issued for any migratory or vagrant species from that region since the flu was detected. The discovery of the penguin prompted a "high-level" biosecurity response from Ms Shibish,...
