Malnourishment, possible ship strike led to death of gray whales in Ocean Shores Two gray whales that washed ashore in Ocean Shores earlier this week were found to be malnourished, with one showing signs of a possible ship strike, according to biologists. Examinations were conducted April 4 by Cascadia Research, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and SR³ – Sealife Response, Rehabilitation & Research, a day after the whales were discovered on the beach. Officials said both whales were adults measuring about 42 feet in length, one male and one female, and both were in poor nutritional condition. The male whale had significant trauma to the head, which biologists said is consistent with a collision involving a vessel. The female was not lactating, indicating she was not nursing a calf at the time of her death. Experts noted that gray whales are typically solitary animals and do not travel in family groups. They added that the timing and proximity of the strandings are most likely related to migration patterns, as well as tides and ocean currents...

Surfer crashing into a #Whale in #SanFrancisco Bay is a reminder of the growing danger of vessel strikes in urban waters. Even without visible injury, these impacts cause trauma & stress.

We must treat our bays as habitats, not just playgrounds. 🐋

Rice's whales predate modern humans. Now Trump could make them extinct Since before modern humans existed Rice’s whales have been diving to the depths of the ocean to gorge on fat-rich fish while growing to leviathan proportions, their bodies spanning the length of a bus and weighing as much as as six elephants. Unfortunately for these grand creatures, their only home became a patch of the Gulf of Mexico that the oil and gas industry, much later, became highly interested in for drilling. Only about 50 of these baleen whales still exist on Earth, surrounded by clanging aquatic highways of boats and shifting drilling infrastructure. Last week, unbeknown to the cetaceans, an existential moment arrived when the Trump administration made the extraordinary decision to scrap all protections for the Rice’s whale, along with other endangered marine life in the gulf, in service of an industry that has facilitated the overheating of our oceans and our atmosphere. It may result in the first extinction of a whale species in North American waters in 300 years. “Nothing surprises me with this administration but if I was still capable of shock, this would do it,” said Pat Parenteau, an environmental law expert at the Vermont Law School. “‘Unprecedented’ is too mild a term for...

Trump's Cabinet Condemns Rice's Whale to Extinction WASHINGTON— The Endangered Species Committee granted an unprecedented exemption today to all oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico from the requirements of the Endangered Species Act, the first such exemption in the law’s 53-year history. “This amoral action by Pete Hegseth and Trump’s cronies is as horrific as it is illegal, and we’ll overturn it in court,” said Brett Hartl, government affairs director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “Americans overwhelmingly oppose sacrificing endangered whales and other marine life so the fossil fuel industry can get richer. This has nothing to do with national security and everything to do with Trump and his lackeys kowtowing to Big Oil.” The committee, also known as the God Squad or Extinction Committee, used the pretext of “national security” to justify this exemption, which will likely drive the extremely endangered Rice’s whale to extinction. It will also deliver a crushing blow to the conservation of dozens of other threatened and endangered species in the Gulf of Mexico, including sea turtles, whooping cranes and manatees. The committee granted the exemption despite the fact that no company from the oil and gas industry or any federal agency has requested it. The Center for...

Teenager's Fossil Find Leads to Discovery of Shark Teeth in 5 Million-Year-Old Whale Skull Shark teeth found in 5-million-year-old whale skulls provide direct evidence of ancient feeding behavior and predator-prey relationships in the North Sea. Researchers studying two fossilized whale skulls discovered pieces of shark teeth lodged inside the bones, providing rare physical evidence of prehistoric feeding behavior in northern European waters. The research, led by the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), used detailed CT scans to examine the skulls. These scans revealed broken shark teeth that became embedded in the whales’ skulls during feeding, allowing scientists to better understand how these predators interacted with their prey. Dr. Olivier Lambert, a paleontologist at the Institute of Natural Sciences who examined the fossils, said, “Our knowledge of past marine mammal assemblages in the North Sea remains rather fragmentary, so any new fossil may prove informative. In this case, the studied skulls revealed some unexpected and fascinating clues about the way these whales’ lives ended.” CT Scans and Fossil Discoveries in Belgium The skulls date back to the Early Pliocene period, about 4–5 million years ago, and were both found in Belgium. One skull, belonging to a small extinct right whale species, was discovered in the 1980s by Professor John Stewart, an evolutionary paleoecologist...

New study reveals New York Bight is a key spring habitat for endangered sei whales Images available for use with credit can be found here. New York (April 2, 2026) — A new study led by scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) reveals that endangered sei whales regularly use the New York Bight as a key spring habitat, underscoring the importance of this heavily trafficked region for one of the world’s fastest and most elusive baleen whales. Using acoustic monitoring data collected with WHOI-developed technology from 2017 to 2020, researchers documented strong seasonal and daily patterns in sei whale presence and vocal activity. The findings suggest that the waters off New York and New Jersey may serve as an important migratory corridor—and potentially a feeding area—during early spring. The study, Seasonal and Diel Acoustic Activity of Sei Whales (Balaenoptera borealis) in the New York Bight, was conducted by researchers from WCS’s New York Bight Program and WHOI. “This is the first detailed analysis of daily and seasonal acoustic patterns for sei whales in the New York Bight,” explained Maria Papadopoulos, lead author of the study with WCS and graduate researcher at Columbia University. “We found that 95 percent of sei whale vocalizations were detected between March and May,...

Environmental groups sue, say Gulf drilling exemption endangers Rice's whale, sea turtles PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A controversial federal decision could impact the wildlife that call the Gulf home. This week, the Trump administration's Endangered Species Committee exempted oil and gas drilling in the Gulf from protections under the "Endangered Species Act." The decision is being met with pushback from environmentalists. From sea turtles to manatees, and even one of the rarest whales on the planet, the Gulf is filled with wildlife who draw thousands to the coast. "People come to the beaches hoping that they'll see these animals. And a lot of times that they do," said Christian Wagley, coastal organizer of "Healthy Gulf." But Wagley worries that it could all change. "It's pretty clear that oil and gas drilling in the Gulf is a direct threat to so many species of wildlife," he said. "The one that immediately comes to mind is the Rice's whale, which is one of the rarest whales on the planet. They live right out here off of Florida mainly, but around the Gulf Coast. There's fewer than 100 remaining." Wagley worries that exempting the oil and gas industry from protecting these species may drive them to extinction. He's not alone in these concerns. "Oil and gas...

As Humpback Whales Rebound, Older Males Take Over the Mating and Singing Game As humpback whale numbers climb back after decades of large-scale hunting, scientists are spotting strange things. A new study reveals that older males are now more likely to father calves, while younger ones are being edged out. This pattern has grown stronger over time, hinting that the whaling (whale hunting) didn’t just reduce whale numbers—it changed the balance of age and experience, and that is still shaping who succeeds in reproduction today. “We are beginning to understand how far-reaching the consequences of whaling truly are. The impacts extend beyond population size, they shape behaviour, competition, and reproduction,” Franca Eichenberger, lead study author and a whale researcher at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, said. A detective story written in DNA In decades of studying whales, no one has ever witnessed humpback whales mating in the wild. This left a major gap in understanding how reproduction really works in these giants. To tackle this, researchers from the University of St Andrews and their collaborators relied on long-term fieldwork in New Caledonia, tracking whales between 2000 and 2018. “We assessed age-dependent population dynamics, reproductive tactics, and reproductive success of 485 male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) from a recovering breeding ground in...

Why humpback whale rescue effort got called off A humpback whale nicknamed Timmy that has been stranded in the Baltic Sea off Germany will be left to die; all rescue efforts have been called off, according to Till Backhaus, environment minister of the German state where the whale is now stranded. The 12- to 15-meter-long whale became stuck on sandbanks a few times at the end of March—in one incident, it was freed with the help of an excavator that dug an escape channel, and in another, it freed itself. Currently, Timmy is beached on a small island near the port of Wismar, Germany, in the Baltic. Reports suggest the animal, which is thought to be male but whose sex has not been fully confirmed, is exhausted, breathing irregularly and hardly moving. Marine biologist and whale conservationist Fabian Ritter has been following the situation in the media and has been in regular contact with those on the ground. Scientific American’s German-language sister publication Spektrum der Wissenschaft spoke with Ritter about the difficult decision to halt rescue efforts and needed changes in policy and individual actions around such incidents.
