Model Forests as Exemplars of Resilience: How IUCN and the IMFN are collaborating to support community-managed landscapes Model Forests are integrated landscapes that prioritise forest conservation and restoration alongside the social, economic and environmental goals of local communities. These 'living laboratories' focus on a community-based approach to sustainable forest management, including voices across public and private sectors, community and government organisations, and research institutions alike. All Model Forests adhere to six key principles, specifically stakeholder partnerships, landscape level management, commitment to sustainability, participatory governance, a defined programme of activities, and promotion of knowledge-sharing, capacity-building, and networking. The International Model Forest Network (IMFN) is the global platform comprised of the world’s Model Forests and their regional networks. IUCN and the IMFN began collaborating in 2024 through Canada’s Global Forest Leadership Program and the IMFN Climate Initiative. In particular, the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team has worked with IUCN Regional Offices in South America, Asia, and Africa to achieve three major objectives in support of Model Forests. The project has aimed to: Bring tools and approaches to enhance Model Forest experiences and impacts on restoration target-setting, planning, delivery and monitoring. Enrich forest and landscape restoration efforts through gender-responsive approaches and guidance. Enhance visibility and amplify impact through expertise sharing and ramping up the visibility of Model Forests’ efforts globally...

'Nature is essential to our economy, our stability, our humanity': IUCN President tells ChangeNOW Summit Speaking to an audience of global leaders from business, finance, science, and civil society, she emphasised the urgency of addressing interconnected environmental crises, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation, as these challenges continue to accelerate amid global uncertainty and geopolitical challenges. In her address, President Al Mubarak stressed that nature underpins all economic systems, urging leaders to rethink how it is valued. She said: “It is especially in moments like this that we see clearly that nature, energy, society, and finance are not separate conversations. They are deeply interconnected. “Yet too often, they are not aligned in our attention, not aligned in our investment, and not aligned in our actions. “The reality is that nature cannot be separated from human systems. It is affected by all that I have just mentioned. Energy sources, markets, financial systems, supply chains, economies, and movements are all interconnected. “And the results of our choices are visible in the loss of ecosystems and the pressures we place on the natural world. But we also have the opportunity to rethink these systems, to redesign them in ways that serve both nature and people. “It is time to recognise that nature is essential to our...

IUCN and the African Model Forest Network (AMFN) build capacity in Africa's community-managed forests The African Model Forest Week took place in Mbalmayo, Cameroon, from 24-26 February, 2026. The IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team and the IUCN Cameroon Country Office were co-organisers of the week’s workshop, alongside critical regional partners, namely the African Model Forest Network (known in the region as le Réseau Africain de Forêts Modèles, or RAFM), Université Laval, and the Network of Forestry and Environmental Training Institutions in Central Africa (known in the region as le Reseau des Institutions de Formation Forestière et Environnementale en Afrique Centrale, or RIFFEAC). Broadly, support for this workshop came from the International Model Forest Network (IMFN). The IMFN is a global network which brings together over 60 Model Forests from across more than 30 countries. Model Forests are forest landscapes where communities and stakeholders cooperatively govern and conserve their ecosystems, allowing social, environmental, economic and cultural benefits and trade-offs to be considered equally within the unique context of each Model Forest. The AMFN is the regional network which encompasses sub-Saharan Africa and its Model Forests, acting as a bridge between Africa’s individual Model Forests and the wider IMFN, while also providing a regional coordination role. Sub-Saharan Africa currently contains two officially recognised Model Forests—namely Dja...

IUCN highlights the role of wetlands and international cooperation at the opening of CMS COP15 At the beginning of his intervention, Gabriel Quijandría emphasised the symbolic significance of the conference venue, near the Pantanal, one of the most important ecosystems on the planet for biodiversity. He then highlighted the central role of wetlands in global ecological connectivity: “Wetlands are essential natural infrastructure for migratory species and for people. Migratory species depend on networks of habitats along international routes, which in many cases include extensive and highly significant wetlands. Wetlands are crucial nodes in this connectivity.” The Director also drew attention to the vulnerability of these ecosystems, often underestimated in comparison with other habitats, despite their ecological and socioeconomic relevance: “These ecosystems, by ensuring water supply for human needs, reducing disaster risk, and supporting agricultural production and fisheries, sustain not only millions of people in rural areas and fishing communities, but also major urban areas located far away.” Another key point of his intervention was the need to strengthen mechanisms for cooperation among countries and institutions, articulating different levels of governance to ensure the effective conservation of migratory species and their habitats: “To strengthen the protection of these ecosystems and the associated migratory species, it is essential to promote inter-institutional and international cooperation and to consider...

Argentina updates national IUCN mammal list with new focus on non-native species Scientists have updated the conservation status of hundreds of mammals in Argentina, adding previously unassessed species and revising biodiversity threat levels. The assessment evaluated 417 native mammal species across the country, identifying national threats even in species that are listed as least concern. More than 500 scientists contributed to the effort, which also involved a new way of measuring the impact of non-native mammals. “Some species are more at risk of disappearing than others, either because they’re more exposed or because their biology and ecology make them more affected by certain [factors],” Javier Pereira, general coordinator of the 2025 Categorization of the Mammals of Argentina, told Mongabay. “We need to measure that in order to have an indication of which species are more at risk than others.” The Argentine Society for the Study of Mammals (SAREM), a national collective of scientists, conducts periodic assessments of the conservation status of mammal species in Argentina. Its goal is to better understand population trends and threats across the country’s many ecosystems. Species expert teams review available scientific literature, monitoring data and field observations from the previous five years and then assign conservation statuses, which are then reviewed and formally validated by a committee...

Happy International Day of Forests from IUCN Oceania In Oceania, forests are deeply connected to our identity, culture and way of life. From the highlands of Papua New Guinea to the coastal mangroves of Fiji and the Gilbert Islands, forests provide food, medicine, clean water and shelter. They support local economies through sustainable agriculture, forestry and eco-tourism, while also protecting our communities from climate impacts such as floods, droughts and coastal erosion. As highlighted by IUCN’s global work, forests regulate our climate, protect biodiversity and sustain millions of people worldwide. However, our forests are under increasing pressure from deforestation, land degradation and climate change. In the Pacific, these challenges are felt strongly by communities who depend directly on healthy ecosystems for their survival and wellbeing. We must recognise that protecting forests is not only an environmental responsibility, but also an economic and social priority. Investing in forests means investing in people, in resilience, and in a sustainable future for our islands. Across the region, there is hope. Communities, governments and partners are working together to restore forests, strengthen traditional knowledge, and implement Nature-based Solutions that support both people and nature. These efforts show that when we value forests, they will continue to provide benefits for generations while contributing...

IUCN and the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) condemn attack at Upemba National Park We extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the five park staff members who tragically lost their lives in this attack. We also express our solidarity with the staff and rangers of the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN), who continue to safeguard one of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s most important protected areas under extremely challenging conditions. Across the world, rangers and protected area staff work at the forefront of conserving biodiversity and protecting ecosystems that are vital for all of humanity. Too often, they do so at great personal risk. The events at Upemba National Park are a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who dedicate their lives to protecting nature. IUCN and WCPA reaffirm our commitment to supporting rangers and protected area personnel everywhere, in line with Resolution 101 adopted by IUCN Members at the 2025 IUCN World Conservation Congress. Rangers and park workers are essential to the protection of global biodiversity and the natural heritage upon which communities and future generations depend. We call on governments, international partners, and the global conservation community to strengthen measures that ensure the safety and protection of rangers and protected...

IUCN's NAbSA initiative launches new brief series to accelerate Nature-based Solutions for ... Launched during a high-level gathering hosted by NAbSA and Global Affairs Canada, and developed with the contributions and expertise of different projects across Partnering for Climate, the IUCN Secretariat, including the Global Ecosystem-based Adaptation Fund (Global EbA Fund), the series translates lessons from on-the-ground experience into actionable guidance — aligning directly with IUCN’s Nature 2030 Programme and its Eight Global Transformations for nature and people. As climate impacts intensify — from droughts and floods to food insecurity and coastal erosion — the need for solutions that restore ecosystems while strengthening livelihoods has never been clearer. The new briefs provide a roadmap for making NbS more inclusive, investable and accountable. Advancing the Climate–Nature Nexus The series strongly supports the first Nature 2030 ‘Transformation on climate change adaptation and mitigation’, which calls for national and international climate strategies to optimise the role of NbS while safeguarding biodiversity. The first brief, ‘Safeguarding Nature, Empowering Communities’, reframes social and environmental safeguards not as bureaucratic checklists, but as strategic enablers of effective adaptation. Drawing on field experience, it shows how integrating community priorities, diverse knowledge systems and equitable governance reduces maladaptation risks and strengthens long-term resilience. At a time when climate investments are accelerating, the...

Policy in action: How IUCN ESARO's technical leadership catalyzed the institutionalization of Ethiopia's PES framework For years, the concept of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) remained a promising but abstract mechanism in Ethiopia. While the need to link ecosystem conservation with sustainable development was evident, translating this into a functional legal framework required overcoming significant institutional and technical challenges. Key national actors, including the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), the Ethiopian Biodiversity Institute (EBI), and the Ethiopian Wildlife Authority (EWA), required consistent, evidence-based support to move from theoretical discourse to a nationally owned, actionable policy framework. Since 2021, IUCN ESARO's team on the ground, led by Abdeta Robi, Programme Officer for Ethiopia, has been at the heart of this transformation. Operating at the intersection of science and policy, the team has worked to ensure that national institutions are empowered as architects of their own environmental agenda. This work has focused on enhancing landscape restoration, addressing biodiversity loss, regulating access to natural resources, and integrating environmental costs and benefits into national accounting systems. A partnership grounded in technical accompaniment Building on a formal MoU with Ethiopia's EPA, IUCN ESARO deployed a strategy rooted in deep technical accompaniment. The team's work exemplifies the whole-of-government, whole-of-society approach in action, serving as technical partners embedded within the policy ecosystem rather...
