A Canada goose glides through calm water near a rocky shoreline, shown from a very low angle. Its dark body and long neck stand out against soft silver and blue reflections, and its reflection appears below it in the rippled water. The photo feels quiet and watchful.

I was up early this morning photographing blue hour, and this Canada goose came by to watch. I like how its reflection shows up in the water. Low-angle wildlife at its finest.

A small white sailboat rests on a floating dock on Lake Washington during blue hour. The water is smooth and softly blurred, with distant shoreline lights glowing across the lake and a dark wooded hillside on the right. Above, layered blue clouds stretch across the sky with bright openings near the horizon, giving the whole scene a calm evening atmosphere. The photo feels peaceful, still, and reflective.

Blue hour on Lake Washington.

While I was at Lake Washington last night, this sailboat caught my eye.

Blue hour light always feels a little more reflective to me.

A close view of a waterfall dropping along the left side of the frame beside a steep brown rock wall. Thick mist rises from the impact zone and spreads across the lower half of the image. A soft rainbow arcs horizontally through the mist near the center of the scene, stretching above wet rocks and shallow water. In the foreground, rounded river stones cover the shoreline, and a large dark boulder sits to the right near the edge of the pool. The photo feels fleeting and quietly magical because of the rainbow appearing inside the spray.

While I was at Franklin Falls this past weekend, this rainbow formed in the spray.

What I like here is how the rainbow and mist almost make it look like there are water droplets on the lens, but that texture is really the dark rock in the background.

A forested section of the South Fork Snoqualmie River at Snoqualmie Pass flows through a narrow rocky gorge lined with evergreen trees. Near the upper center of the image, a small waterfall drops into a dark pool before the river continues downhill over smooth rocks and small cascades. Moss covers parts of the rocks and tree trunks, and patches of lingering snow sit on the slope to the right. In the foreground, the water widens into a calmer green pool with a shallow gravel edge visible beneath the surface. The image feels quiet, cool, and tucked away deep in the forest.

What I liked about this scene is the small waterfall tucked into the bend and the way the river flowed down through the rocks into that pool below.

A forest trail near Franklin Falls in Washington State winds uphill through dense evergreen trees, with a series of dirt steps and log borders leading deeper into the woods. Moss-covered stumps, low brush, and scattered roots line the path, while tall conifers fill the background and create a quiet, enclosed feeling. The trail curves gently out of sight, giving the scene a peaceful sense of depth and discovery. The photo feels calm, inviting, and quietly reflective.

Morning hike to Franklin Falls

Yesterday on the hike up to Franklin Falls, this winding trail caught my eye.

I liked how this path kept bending through the forest, pulling me farther in with every turn.

A lakeside scene at Colman Park Beach in Seattle showing a willow tree with long green spring branches hanging low over the water. The water below reflects the green tones of the tree in soft rippling patterns. On the right edge of the frame, a patch of pale dried grass creates a strong contrast against the darker water and bright green leaves. Trees line the far shore in the distance under soft daylight. The photo feels calm, fresh, and quietly reflective.

What do you notice first here, the willow, the reflection, or the grass?

Mount Rainier rises in the distance beyond Lake Washington, lit by warm evening alpenglow on its snowy upper slopes. A dark tree-lined shoreline stretches across the middle of the frame, with a few homes tucked among the trees. In the foreground, the lake shows bands of deep blue and pale reflected light, with gentle ripples moving across the water. The photo feels calm, quiet, and reflective.

I drove over to Colman Park and caught the last bit of sunlight on Mount Rainier.

I really love the contrast between the deep blue of Lake Washington and the soft alpenglow on the mountain. It made this evening feel special to me.

Ribbons of Light in Seattle

I drove up to Seattle’s I-90 bridge last night to photograph the traffic with a 30-second exposure.

What I really enjoy here is the depth, from the bridge in front, to the city behind it, to the distant mountains fading into the last light.

Sunset over the water at Seahurst Park in Burien, Washington. The sun sits low at the horizon and creates a bright golden reflection that runs vertically across very calm water toward the beach. The sky is clear with a warm orange glow near the horizon and a soft bluish tone above. In the foreground, large weathered driftwood logs lie across dark sand and pebble beach, adding strong shapes and texture. Distant shoreline and mountain silhouettes form a dark band beneath the fading sky, with a wooded point visible on the right. The image feels calm, grounded, and quietly luminous.

Golden hour at Seahurst Park

Sunsets on Puget Sound never get old. The driftwood in the foreground and that clean vertical reflection were what held this frame together for me.

Quick question: What catches your eye first here, the glowing reflection or the logs?

A telephoto view of Mount Rainier during blue hour, covered in snow and rising above dark forested foothills. The sky is a deep blue, and a very faint, thin cloud band hovers horizontally above the summit, only subtly visible against the sky. The lower slopes are darker with layered ridges and evergreen forest, while the mountain itself is softly lit and detailed with snowfields, gullies, and broad glacier-covered faces. The photo feels quiet, cold, and a little surprising once you notice the delicate cloud above the peak.

Lenticular over Mount Rainier.

This was a 30 second blue hour exposure. I could not actually see that faint cloud band with my eyes at the time, but the long exposure picked it up above the summit.

A tall white waterfall drops through a narrow opening in dense evergreen forest. Dark green conifers fill nearly the entire frame, with branches and foliage overlapping the view so the falls appear partially hidden deep in the trees. Sunlight catches parts of the forest canopy and some of the rock near the top of the cascade, while the water stands out brightly against the darker shaded surroundings. The photo feels secluded, lush, and quietly powerful.

Lower falls at Wallace Falls State Park, Washington.

I went for a hike here and was struck by how the trail keeps you close to the Wallace River before opening to this view through the trees. It is one of those places that feels deep, green, and full of motion.

A close view of cherry blossom trees in full bloom, with dense clusters of soft pale pink flowers filling most of the frame. Dark branches and tree trunks weave through the blossoms, adding contrast and structure to the light floral canopy. The background is mostly hidden by the mass of blooms, giving the image a layered and immersive spring feel. The photo feels gentle, quiet, and fleeting.

Cherry Blossoms in Spring.

For a few days each year, everything feels softer under these blossoms. I always notice how quickly this kind of beauty appears and disappears. That may be part of why it feels so special.
