Slump year reads. Borrowed 66 books from the library, only finished 15. Three of them were bookclub reads. Most were just okay. One I strongly disliked. Two I really liked, not counting the non-fiction.

My favorite of 2025 was "Their Eyes Were Watching God."

I think it depends. Blue Jays, for instance, will be aggressive to most other birds except other Blue Jays outside of mating season. But I do think they all recognize other species by sight, smell & call. I can always tell when there's a hawk around because the smaller birds lose their shit. 🤣

I debated writing this. It can feel tempting, upon encountering yet another instance of this administration’s racism, to let it be. How many ways can you say the same thing over and over again? And yet we have to write it down, if for nothing else, so those who come after us know we were against it.

The 1st time I realized that the justice system, specifically police, don't protect women was when I was a child watching Nancy McKeon play Tracy Thurman in a movie on Lifetime. This was 1989, and we've made no progress with domestic violence protection since then. Latricia's fam deserve justice!

African American, in the United States specifically, means the descendants of transatlantic slavery. Black refers to phenotype. If you are not of African descendant with melanated skin, you are not Black. If you are not Black & a descendant of enslaved people, you are not African American.

Neither do Caribbeans, but their lived experience is completely different because they are from homogeneous (black) countries with very small immigrant populations.
