I think this is a “within reason“ thing. For example, I would argue that a commitment to universal healthcare and ending employer-sponsored healthcare is both a value and a strong policy view, even if it allows flexibility in whether that should be a multi-payer or single-payer or socialized system.

If I may add—Black voters constitute similar percentages of the population in Maryland and Alabama. The political chasm between the two is primarily because of the very different voting behavior of white voters in those states.

In all seriousness, if you really do have a general election where the party of the winner is a foregone conclusion, I think if anything it gives members of the minority party a chance to weigh in on which majority party member they would prefer in a way they otherwise couldn’t.
