New in Nature Human Behaviour: How Deceptive Online Networks Reached Millions in the US 2020 Elections www.nature.com/articles/s41...
-Reached at least 37M Facebook and 3M Instagram users
-3 networks out of 49 responsible for >70% of users reached
-Exposed users older, more conservative
The perception that “news finds me” is increasingly central to political comm & democracy work. People who believe that “news will find them” even if they don’t consume it directly are less knowledgeable & less politically interested (Gil de Zuniga 2019)

100% agree and this was the big plan for my next NSF grant until the federal govt decided that studying misinformation was censorship and that all behavioral science is unnecessary and woke 😭
(Still hoping to do the work, just postponed for now)
This study shows that disinformation spreads, not as “false facts”, but as narratives. Compare that to how mis- and disinformation are often operationalized in the big-N quantitative and experimental research in the Nature/Science journals — that’s a major weakness in the field.
Here’s a cool story. NYT eliminated public editor in 2017.
Sulzberger said readers on social media had “come together to collectively serve as a modern watchdog, more vigilant and forceful than one person could ever be.”
Baquet said “a whole world of very public critics that we pay attention to.”

Looks like we’re well into the political purges of senior military officers stage of authoritarianism.
It’s been going this whole time, but now noticeably accelerated.
Even worse, the regime is doing it in the middle of a war, one they launched that is going poorly.
Trump started a pointless and illegal war with Iran, he lost it almost immediately, he crushed America's economy and America's partners while making Iran and our rivals much stronger. He did it for no reason he can articulate.
In any decent nation, he'd be forced to resign immediately.
NEW from @julialurie.bsky.social: As media and political scrutiny of the Dilley family detention center has increased—particularly after 5-year-old Liam Ramos arrived in January—so have threats of retribution against those who speak out.
Really unusual.
- NYT & BBC: US military struck sports hall/school in Lamerd, Iran with a new weapon never before used in war (the PrSM)
- DoD: denies any US strike in Lamerd and claims video "does not show" that weapon
- Then great @bellingcat.com's Trevor Ball refutes DoD claim about the video
Yup, this is why Trump & RFK Jr built their health cabinet entirely out of MAGA & MAHA loyalists who had downplayed the pandemic, rejected scientific expertise, told people not to trust public health, cast doubt on the need for COVID vaccines, & pushed hard for mass infection instead of vaccination
The fact that Trump is going to oral arguments to pressure the justices to acquiesce to his attempted nullification of a constitutional amendment and create a stateless class for the first time since the civil war, illustrates what is really at the core of the Trump project and it isn’t tariffs.
This press release sure seems like the Marines warning undocumented family members of their latest class of recruits to avoid the graduation ceremony in order to keep themselves safe from immigration enforcement.
As we see images of hundreds of thousands coming together in support of democracy, know that togetherness, connection, and collective meaning-making are signs of a functioning democratic society. This participatory act, rooted in joy, solidarity, and a positive vision of the future IS democracy.
Fawning toady gets seat in press room as North Korea-style White House makeover continues. Pretty soon they’ll be bringing in cases of cognac and DVDs of 80s movies.
A predictable #NoKings take from Jeremy Peters: A small turnout will be ominous, a large one will be meaningless, all protests from the left are merely a "primal scream," and none of them mean much. The NYT has always loved protests as history but hated them as news. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/28/u...

6 out of 10 Americans share news on social media after only reading the headline. Headlines become part of the way we understand politics as a society.
By privileging the words of a known liar, MSM has participated in the erosion of our democracy.

This is not sustainable. People are not fools. They know they’ve been sold a lie.
Pretty disrespectful to call Abughazaleh a social media personality. She did serious work for MMFA for years.
SCOOP— Trump wants a 24k gold coin w/ his face on it for America 250, but an official at a late February coin advisory committee meeting called it something only done by "nations ruled by kings or dictators." After NYT reported the criticism, US Mint yanked online vid of the meeting w/o explanation.
Neutrality isn't journalism, it's a choice.
When the NYT describes TPUSA as "controversial" instead of documenting its history of white nationalism, that omission is its own bias.
Your trusted news sources owe you context.

I think it’s worse to ignore the mountain of evidence that someone is a pathological liar and construe their rhetoric as promises intended to be delivered upon.
