It’s what I expected but also a little surprising. I’d like to see more cuts to the police budget!
We knew the attacks were coming.
We had to go there to specifically protect social housing.
Thanks for the book recommendations, but I’m asking for an example of a policy we can put in place instead of taxing the rich.
Example: Bike Bus is a fun, eco-friendly way to get kids to school. It also takes money (power) out of the hands of the oil industry. Thousands of gallons of gas go un-purchased. Money saved can be donated to a DSA city council campaign. It’s a small way to take power back from the ruling class.
I bet the Portland Metro Chamber feels like they are.
Don Draper in MAD MEN
Tony Soprano in THE SOPRANOS
crazy how two beloved, iconic shows came along in the first two decades of the 2000s to dissect the myth of american masculinity and expose it hollowness and literally the exact second they ended, the whole country doubled down on the american masculinity myth and set the world on fire.
The problem with Portland politics is that people treat "politeness" as neutral or even positive, meanwhile I have met some of the most hostile polite people in City Hall. They do a great job speaking in code and hiding behind a smile while systematically pushing policies that actually hurt people.
You talk about me being idealistic or faith based and you’re the one who says you goal is to “only do good things.”
There is no such thing as good or bad. There is only power. The people who have oppress the people who don’t. I’ve not seen it any other way.
How do we change the massive power/wealth differentials?

That’s a wild assumption for you to make that I’m just “believing” in socialism on faith. For the supposedly nice “Bike Bus” guy, you’re being kind of a dick.
There is no such thing as altruistic capitalism. Our society allows 800K+ people to sleep on the streets. A problem that could be solved with a small sacrifice from a few billionaires, but they’re not going to do it. The entire system is designed to reward that kind of behavior, so it must end.
Look you’re not going to convince me to like capitalism. I grew up in a conservative home with an almost religious devotion to capitalism. I’m very aware of it.
Did you not know I was a democratic socialist? It was on my website lol.
I know that capitalism could end and there could still be racism. But capitalism is the pinnacle of those injustices. To me the end of capitalism means the beginning of socialism. Socialism offers an end to not just to capitalism but the injustices which caused it and that it continues to perpetuate
As an American. I make the decision to buy a gun and go shoot somebody. I get convicted and go to jail.
An a health Insurance exec. I make the decision to deny care and kill someone. I get a bonus.
We Deserve Better Than This….
The Capitalist system compels individual homeowners to protect the value of their private property. Therefore, they elect politicians who agree with the policies of capitalists that will protect their home values, which only allow low-density housing. Hence, the government is run by capitalists.
Government is a tool, like a hammer. In the hands of the capitalist it helps Capital. In the hands of a socialist it helps the people.
Yes, a government run by capitalists, create terrible zoning codes we have.

Good to know. My experience with YIMBYs has been the opposite.
I don't disagree with building more housing. But YMIBYs myopically focus on the number of housing units built. As if we will hit some magical number and the crisis will be solved. We need a robust public sector to challenge the private market if we want to drive prices down.
I agree with zoning reforms. We got to have them! We just can’t build (i.e. use the private market alone) our way out of this crisis.
When I hear “build our way out of this crisis” I’m assuming people see the only way out is through the private sector.
Wow you really think I’m stupid.
It’s right in the post above: “and in public outreach, the public consistently asked for the zoning options with the worst affordability outcomes.”
Homeowners used zoning codes. Are you insinuating that it’s the government’s fault we are in this mess?
I understand that. But we need to look beyond the private market at some point. If we just focus on building homes for private ownership then we will never get out of this crisis.
I didn’t say that.
