Emerald Constellations - I’ve seen cracked mud before. Plenty of it.
But this? This was new. Algae? Cyanobacteria?

Fun to find something unexpected, intricate, and oddly beautiful—and leaves you to figure out what you’re looking at.

"Walk This Way" - The patterns and mineral colors make for a compelling abstract on their own. But add a few bird tracks, and suddenly it’s not just texture—it’s a story. Something was here. And just as quickly, it was gone. #abstract #naturephotography

Sand. Fun when I was a kid… still fun now.
Big dunes turn into a playground for photography—endless lines, shifting light, and more compositions than you know what to do with.
And somehow, against all odds, I made it back to camp with very little sand in my shorts. Winning.
Best to ya!

"Sand-sational Waves" -One of the many dune images I took during a recent visit to Death Valley NP. Those soft dunes and layered ridges almost look like flowing fabric. The warm light against the cooler background hills gives it a calm, almost dreamlike feel. Fun in the sand!

Hi Ronald! Thanks for your kind words! I appreciate you taking a moment of your time to express your opinion of my work. That kind of feedback is genuinely valued! And yes, although color is my preferred workspace, more and more, I value the tonal qualities of black & white images. Cheers!

"Chromatic Earth" - This image is an example referred to as alpenglow. Taken after sunset, this hillside in Death Valley NP takes on a rich watercolor look I really have always been drawn to.

"Bloom Boom" This image captures one of those unforgettable moments in Death Valley NP when a place reveals itself in a way you never expected.

Even the harshest landscapes can transform into something surprisingly vibrant—a reminder that nature still has the power to surprise. Cheers!

Yes! My favorite, Mount Shuksan, WA! A storm had just cleared. The trees were heavy with fresh snow. Wispy clouds moved slowly across the summit. No dramatic color. No sky fireworks. Just a quiet glorious day in the high country.
And, thus, the name of this image, "Snow Place Like Home".

When an alpine lake decides to redecorate for winter and goes full abstract.

Just freeze, crack, refreeze… and a little alpine drama.

"Critter Crossing" - How about a little calming effect of the Hoh Rainforest? This scene really appealed to me where the fallen logs became natural bridges and a crystal clear stream slips through layers of moss, ferns, and fresh spring greens.
Enjoy! #landscapephotography #rainforest

"Reaching Out" Badland scenes are captivating even though they are just large piles rock and dirt. But when you think about it, they have so many interesting qualities - unique textures and patterns, rich earthy colors, large scale and vastness, mood and atmosphere, and a sense of quiet.

ā€œLabyrinth of Hoodoosā€ — Planned for a winter storm at Bryce Canyon for weeks (2017).
10-hour drive.
Froze all night in back of truck.
Sunrise sucked.
Cold toes.
Storm cleared anyway during the day.
Worth it!

"Morning Pastels" - One of those memorable sunrises taken in Capitol Reef Nat'l Park several years ago. The large monoliths and subtle clouds were catching the first light of day providing a soft painterly feel to this scene. #landscapephotography #southwest #sunrise

"Sea You There" - A small glimpse of the many wonders found along the Olympic National Park coast. In this case rock and water, instead of rainforests, are the main attraction.

Aloft - I was anticipating heavy snow on the mountains at Great Sand Dunes NP several years ago, to capture a nice contrasty image. Unfortunately, not much snow. But seemingly out of nowhere, these lenticular clouds appeared. Wow! Not one to focus on just sky in my images, but THIS was special.

"Show-Off" A Pacific Madrone tree never blends in—and this one isn’t even trying. Unique is understatement for this deciduous evergreen tree. After a rain, rich colors are often revealed. The contrast between the cinnamon thin bark and green trunk appear to glow. Enjoy!

"Stillness" - Another of the many reflections I captured this past autumn. Reflections, besides creating natural symmetry, often add a sense of depth to an image. They also add a abstract and painterly quality to an image, making it stand out from a straightforward landscape shot. Enjoy!

"Wings of Winter" - One of the joys of winter in the Skagit Valley (WA), is the arrival of thousands of wintering snow geese and swans. Watching these Trumpeter Swans pass overhead is equal parts wonder and disbelief as they are massive birds. #BirdsInFlight, #WinterWildlife, #PacificNorthwest

"Layers of October" - As I've previously mentioned, there is not a lot of aspen groves in Washington, but when one finds them, the mix of aspen and other colorful bushes can be spectacular. Love the painterly feel of this one.

"Branches of Gold" - While out taking autumn images, this scene reminded me to always look up while under a tree. I definitely am enamored by oaks trees in general with their gnarly and twisted branches, but add in some backlit golden leaves - wow! #landscapephotography #autumn #fineartprint

"Summit of Stillness" - Winter is here! I really like these winter scenes displaying the interplay of cold tones and warm sky, the textural depth in the snow-covered trees, and the subtle transition from shadow to light. Certainly makes cold toes worth it to witness these scenes. Cheers!

"Tanglewood" - Wild, tangled, and wonderfully chaotic — that’s the style of these mighty oaks. Add in that warm, gentle autumn light and, well… there’s no way I’m walking past without taking a photo (or two or three...)!
Best to ya!

Turning reality into abstract art is how I best describe water reflection photography. Humans are wired to perk up when we see patterns or balanced shapes. Reflections are the ultimate expression of symmetry. And with the right composition, reflections lend themselves to a bit of mystery.
