Yeah which is why they can get away with it. It's always been difficult but yep - so much harder now.
Any institution advertising a role like this has no concept of their responsibility within the academy. It's ok for other places (in their view) to develop people academically + for them to take from that, but not to contribute to any further development to pay it back. They don't deserve employees.

I guess the difference is ... community. I always feel a proper human connection in SL, and didn't when I dropped into Horizon Worlds. Maybe it's only third person platforms, where you don't feel your experience is being co-opted by a huge tech company like Meta that can supply that.
... but then I never used Horizon Worlds, and am still using Second Life, so maybe it isn't. 🤷♂️
This on the heels of AltspaceVR disappearing a couple of years ago. Not sure why someone would use a new flatscreen metaverse when there's plenty of more established ones (Minecraft, Second Life etc around). I'd have thought a headset-VR based metaverse would be the next sensible step ...
So a few months back Meta screwed up a personalised bit of the VR experience by removing the landing environment I'd chosen and replacing it with a generic one that had direct links to Horizon Worlds. Now they're withdrawing VR support for it. www.uploadvr.com/meta-horizon...

My keynote is on a phenomenological framework for VR which i'm working on at the moment. "Working on" being the operative phrase - it's very much a work in progress so it'll be mainly me asking for tips. Which is setting a keynote of some sort I suppose.

Actually - though i usually prefer revivals to reboots I think starting again free from the Whedon influence as much as possible would not be a bad idea much as I love the original cast.
