there is an actual DJ
Update: someone just yelled over the loudspeaker “DJ turn the music up!” And there is now thudding club music and the flight attendants are doing a step and repeat
Apparently today is the 100 year anniversary of the first American Airlines flight, and it was from Chicago to St. Louis. And there is a flight to St. Louis leaving ahead of us from our gate and they just gave them a speech and took a group photo
You probably think you can't hate Target more than you already do but ....
tho every now and then people share good clips from an interview I thought was bad so who knows
almost any time I listen to an interview then see clips from it shared, im find the full interview left me with a very different impression than the clips.
tbh idk if this means clips are useless or im easily bamboozled by listening to a friendly-sounding person talk for a while
Can never get over how tawdry the modern Right's view of Western Civilization is; nothing to build, nothing to aspire to, nothing even really to destroy or wage war against, just sullen resentment of their own children and seething hatred of the cities whose economics subsidies their regimes.
after they do this, you'll explain to newcomers to the city that they used to just pile trash on the sidewalk and they'll think you're fucking with them and telling an obviously made-up tall-tale
my little sister died a year and a half ago. I still have the thoughts you describe, but they aren't as sharp or painful as they were a year ago. It's more that she comes into my mind when good things happen, or during the day. But the underlying emotions vary more and are more manageable
everything we are seeing now is the consequence of having a political environment in which indifference to the deaths and suffering of other people - even by the state whose supposed responsibility is to safeguard their welfare - is a superpower rather than a political liability
In Korea, when the president declared martial law after midnight and erected barricades in Seoul, congressional reps from all parties ran into the streets, yanked ak47s from the army at the barricades, broke down the locked door to Congress, repealed the martial law order, and arrested the president
There are Jews who sincerely (and imo wrongly) hold to a Zionism that they feel emerges from liberal values. But this argument is not that. It's Nazi.
It's also an objectively pro-Nazi argument. The Nazis and Zionists agreed, explicitly, that the Jews must leave Europe and go to Palestine. The Bund disagreed with the Nazis and Zionists and refused. The argument here is that the genocidal Nazi response to that refusal validates Nazi POV.
This did lead to a funny thing where I was chatting about the mission with our houseguests last evening, and after like 20 minutes one of them asked "what makes it crude?"
If this is true, this is a loss on an NCAR comparable scale. Like, unthinkable
you have a complex and difficult job
If an Iranian soldier was stuck in the mountains in the US, the UK, Israel, or Germany, & every American or British or Israeli or German boy or man from 16 to 60 walking within 3km of him was killed by drones, would any politician or media call it anything other than murder?
When the US admits that they killed any “military-aged men” who walked within 3km of a downed pilot they mean any boy lanky enough to be a teenager and any middle-aged man able to walk unaided with a cane got shot in the head for the crime of walking.
Thank you for the thorough explanation! That is surprising. I would have guessed there was a significant additional mortality from the social and infrastructural effects of the pandemic
I'd read a piece of historical fiction about a pistol-packing 73-year-old former First Lady taking on the Klan.
A concern I have that is maybe misplaced: that as a symptom of the general rot in government over time, funds *within NASA* that might otherwise be allocated to pure science missions will increasingly be devoted to a less and less scientifically-motivated human spaceflight program
Has had a massive population boom driven by energy extraction in the last couple decades.
When I was there in 2018 it was *overwhelmingly* male, almost every building was a prefab or literal storage container, and there were stickers advertising sex for sale everywhere. Great burrito place though.

I made a little Instagram reel about this image because it’s just so frickin’ cool
My personal take is some people say bad and bigoted things sometimes but are not fundamentally bad and bigoted people. I'm not a Hasan listener but that's my rough impression of him from interviews and stuff. At least bro isn't doubling down on it the way, like, rogan would
the thing about hasan piker calling hasidim "inbred" is
1) it's obviously, explicitly antisemitic and it's silly to pretend otherwise
2) this is a form of antisemitism I most frequently hear from...secular jews. (Specifically fought with David Cross of all people about this slur years ago)
a lot of what's wrong with america can be traced to our weird identitarian/epistemological relationship to consumer products
all of the lessons of the Trump era are the type you’d learn from a children’s book. you tried to use bullying to get what you want, but you alienated your allies, oh no! you have learned the power of friendship.
