I felt for a long time that Eightball was the last classic Marvel villain, a guy with a ridiculous (yet well-designed!) costume and theme, not made in irony or for purpose of pastiche. He just had the bad luck of debuting long after such creations were no longer in vogue, so he was never caught on.

Yeah, I think you’re right. I’m sure editors read it but it was already essentially a finished product to them, so close attention (at least of the sort overworked and underpaid editors now have to offer) probably wasn’t paid.

Hm. It’s equally basic but I suppose for me it’s the LOTR trilogy. It’s what comes to mind, anyway.

I ran a Marvel RPG campaign once in which the players faced a team of all the supervillains they hated most from the comics (Azazel, Neo, etc.). The villains had a nefarious plan, but it didn’t matter; my players were sufficiently motivated by their rage at the group’s mere existence. Much fun.
