And don't get me started on the alien, which conveyed all the cosmic mystery and exoticism of a puppet play touring regional primary schools. Christ, I could go on but we've got lives to live. I don't get to the movies often enough for one of them to wind up being this steaming pile.

Also it was shit. It stole shamelessly from the great sci-fi films. Most notably Arrival -one of the grt films of recent yrs in my opinion- of which it is like a bad Mad magazine parody. The mix of sci-fi meant to fill you with tension & wonder & so-so wisecracking comedy REALLY fell flat for me.

Hard agree. I found it depressing as fuck that millions were spent on this twee, jokesy piece of average abt a mega-mission to save us all from a fictional climate crisis when we're ACTUALLY in A REAL one which most of the planet -including this ennoying film- IS MINIMISING & AVOIDING THINKING ABT!

It is the 100th birthday of The New Yorker magazine this week. I so admire so many of the cartoonists in there, today and from past years. I got in, once only, in Nov '06 - forever a career highlight. Still, so proud to have been a tiny little part of their story. Happy birthday @newyorker.com!
