(Hmm, I already did this the other day... anyway...) I've been an amateur astronomer all my life. I'm going to see the solar eclipse in Egypt in 2027 and hoping to get some good shots, as well as nice astrophotos in the caribbean and elsewhere.

It's likely that the dismantling of USAID by DOGE (& Trump) has already caused 750,000 deaths worldwide, and in the next 5-10 yrs that could be 15-25 million. Many of those are children under 5. This is the single most evil thing the Trump admin has done, and that's saying a lot.

I've been an amateur astronomer since childhood. I don't get out observing as much as I'd like though. But I am going to see the solar eclipse in Egypt in 2027, so hope to share some pics then, and get astrophoto/travel tips!

How to Abolish the Electoral College | Robert Reich
How to Abolish the Electoral College | Robert Reich Why should the presidential election always come down to the same swing states? Shouldn't your vote count as much no mat

If you don't live in a "swing state," your vote counts less. But we can reform the Electoral College and fix that.

Since we made this video, Maine and now Virginia have joined the National Popular Vote compact.

Here's what you need to know.

I have to disagree. Most fixes are security (and more will be, going forward, with AI hacking on the rise). Every time you *don't* get hacked, thank yourself for keeping your software updated.

I wanted a way to explore Unicode by visual similarity, not just by name or codepoint, so I built Charcutrie.

It lets you browse characters that look alike, search across scripts and symbols, and even sketch a shape to find matching glyphs. (pretty badly for now :D)

A powerhouse El Niño event appears to be brewing for 2026-27 » Yale Climate Connections Triplet tropical cyclones astride the equator could help it develop.

Roughly half of ECMWF's El Niño models are now predicting a "super El Niño" by October. Very rare, and even rarer to be able to predict it this early (indicator of very strong signals). yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/04/a-po...

That bottom-left graph seems suspicious to me. Shouldn't the entire health insurance industry be in the top dark sector? Other countries (in that model) would have their govt insurance costs in the same bucket, which would be much smaller per capita than ours.

Mayor Mamdani can’t magically make buses free. Lesson from Boston: Maybe it doesn’t matter - Epicenter NYC Now that Zohran Mamdani has been elected the next mayor of New York City, it may be tempting to think that voters expect him to  work wonders:  freeze rents, open […]

Do NYC voters expect Zohran Mamdani to actually make all the buses free? I wrote about what New York can learn from the election and reelection of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu about city politics & daydreams.
Thanks for asking me for my take, @mitrakalita.bsky.social

The time is now. We can’t wait. This administration is sending masked secret police into our neighborhoods to kidnap people with deadly consequences.

They want us terrified; instead, we are organizing.

🚨 THIS JUST IN: With over 100 protests still to come, we can already estimate that at least 8 million people participated in No Kings protests today.

That makes No Kings 3 the largest single day of protest in American history. #NoKings

I would love to, and there are other datasets I'd like to work too. Just need some time!

I mask to +/- 60° for graphs but not maps, & I don't mask out ice cells. I've been in conversation with the Climate Reanalyzer folks for a couple of years now to cross-check. See the README for tech details, at the end of github.com/garyo/sea-su.... All code open source for reproducibility.

Daily Global Sea Surface Temperature Visualization Interact with a 3D globe to compare daily sea surface temperatures, anomalies, and trends using NASA’s OISST dataset.

Yes they do! I have a globe visualizer for SSTs (and anomalies) at globe-viz.oberbrunner.com; you can animate over time if you like.

Mine does exactly that... Will have to check.

Mine shows SST just *barely* below record high for this date: github.com/garyo/sea-su... but surely it won't be long before it exceeds the 2024 record (which of course was *way* above any prior year).
