Will Trump last? Will American democracy?
I think of Oscar Wilde on his deathbed, destitute in a rented room. He turned from his visitor to the wall, turned back and said, “my wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One of us has to go.”
Which one in this scenario is American democracy?
An emperor, not a king.

…headlights to let you make that turn. They were altogether the meekest of the meek, and they were well on their way to inheriting the Earth.
But it all seems to have changed overnight. Now they’re among the most death-defying, bird-flipping drivers out there.
I posit the following: the…

Unreliable data and a conclusion about used hybrid/EV uptake…
It used to be that Prius drivers were a breed apart. Their cars were festooned with bumper stickers (“Beware Invisible Cows!”). They drove 15 in 20s. They always stopped dead when they had the right-of-way to flash their…

How long before the midday minimum is 50% of the overnight minimum?
Wagers anyone?

Wow! …7+ GW of behind-the-meter solar production at one point yesterday here in the ISO New England Inc. control area.
Another milestone of sorts will be the day when solar reduces the midday minimum load to half the overnight minimum load. Using yesterday as an example, the minimum overnight…
Estimated rooftop solar in New England topped 7 GW yesterday for the first time, one year after it topped 6 GW for the first time. Utility solar is creeping up toward 1 GW.

Former NASA climate scientist, now Senior Scientist at Project Drawdown, Dr. Kate Marvel, has a fantastic piece in the New York Times today.
This is a must-read if you care about science, the planet, and the future.

Just wanted to remind folks, especially the GOP and the FDD, that Barack Obama’s 2015 nuclear deal didn’t give Iran control of the Strait of Hormuz or allow it to keep 60% enriched uranium. It sent $1.7 billion to Iran versus the tens of billions Iran will now make from tolls. 🤷🏽♂️
To the extent that NECEC does not deliver when required the contract levies pays a penalty, but there may be times when domestic provincial pricing is favorable enough to make the choice of paying the penalty the rational and more lucrative economic decision.
Doubt that it had to do with anticipated low demand in New England. Probably had more to do with weather in QC and/or other factors affecting domestic demand in the province. Again, NECEC's contract doesn't require it to deliver power 24/7/365, but to deliver a certain amount of power each year. ...

In brief, the budgetary proposal addresses the symptom and not the disease that exacerbates energy unaffordability, meaning the the same symptoms will only recur inevitably, and be more painful when they do.

I don’t generally go for “What ifs?,” but this is an intriguing one.
This used EV is the same price as used ICE vehicles of comparable vintage. You don’t need to have pate de fois gras be a regular part of your diet to afford a car that’s less expensive to fuel and requires less maintenance.
Cambridge, MA is planning to do the same.
Talk about a Good Friday news dump: the NRC has quietly voted to phase out the crucial, force-on-force security inspections that have helped ensure #nuclear plants remain protected against terrorist attacks since the aftermath of 9/11. Worst NRC ever.

NASA's Blue Marble picture of Earth, from 1972
It's only worth going back to the Moon if it makes us look properly again at Earth, and appreciate how beautiful, precious and fragile what we have here is. The most famous images from Apollo aren't about the Moon - they're pictures of Earth. We need to stop taking our home for granted.

Are we all in agreement that this vanity war is going to accelerate both the electrification of every process that can be electrified and the development of clean energy resources?
For fossil fuel interests, a case in point of “be careful what you wish for.”
Déjà vu all over again: astronauts on their way to the Moon, and the nation mired in a war started for no good reason, and from which it can’t extricate itself.
