“While I understand foreign policy is the art of managing double standards, these double standards become more and more jarring as the circumstances appear more and more clear,” says Sen. Woo of the legality of the wars in Iran and Lebanon.

The government has yet to clearly state whether the U.S.-Israeli aggression against Iran and Lebanon is legal under international law.
My thoughts in @hilltimes.com:
Congratulations to the 全加陈潁川總堂 on your 108th anniversary. A special shout out to Chairman 陈永权 and Glynnis 陈开心 for your dedication to the association over many many years and for inviting me to this special occasion.
AI is rapidly restructuring and displacing millions of jobs globally, including half of Canadian payroll. The defining political and economic question of our time is: How can the AI dividend help raise the economic floor for everyone, not just concentrating wealth for a narrow set of shareholders?
« Il faut envisager que l’Iran n’est qu’un chapitre dans un plan à beaucoup plus long terme. »
“We have to consider that Iran is just one chapter in a much longer-term plan.”

“Concerns over reliance on Chinese renewable technology are overstated, as solar panels and wind turbines, once installed, generate energy for decades . . . . The strategic response is faster deployment, not hesitation dressed up in the language of security”. @globalaffairs.canada.ca
How might Israel emerge from this war, and what does it mean for the region and Palestine?
At the Senate committee on foreign affairs, I asked @dhorak.bsky.social to assess the broader implications.
Tings Chak & I from Tricontinental write in the April issue of the journal Monthly Review on "The Idea of the 'Uyghur Genocide' and the Realities of Xinjiang". We end with a consideration of the need for politics in debates around ethnicity. See our essay here, monthlyreview.org/articles/the....
How has the war affected public attitudes in Gulf countries?
At last week’s Senate committee meeting on foreign affairs, I asked @globalaffairs.canada.ca how people in Gulf states are reacting to a conflict they didn’t start but are now impacted by.
Western countries who want to rebuild an open, fair and rules-based international must extend their engagement beyond only 'like-minded' partners, writes our editorial board.
Also known as sycophancy. Thank you for the exchange.
I understand your position is to not aggravate the US. How’s that strategy going?
I did not assume that Canada would participate in regime change. My question was whether Canada would support a US/Israeli effort to extend the war to the point of total collapse of the Iranian regime — given our position of wanting to see the end of the current regime. The answer was vague.
Does Canada support regime change in Iran?
If so, does that extend to outcomes achieved through force? I pressed @globalaffairs.canada.ca officials at the Senate foreign affairs committee for a clear answer. 👇
Is the US/Israel war on Iran illegal?
Last week, at the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, I asked @globalaffairs.canada.ca to clarify the legal basis for the use of force. #cdnpoli
Thank you @pitasanna.bsky.social and @juristnews.bsky.social for a great conversation on C-12, C-9, double standards in Canadian foreign policy, Iran, Gaza, the role of the Senate and much more.

The applications are typically stuck at "security screening" with no indication of how long it will take. Many came to Canada under "express" streams and were promised speedy approval. They feel let down by a country they have been contributing to for years.
Last Friday, I joined with 200+ professionals, skilled workers, students, community workers, caregivers ++ who gathered on Parliament Hill to protest the unreasonable IRCC delays in processing their citizenship applications — amounting to as much as 90 months!
A screenshot of a repost on social media by Andrew Feinstein featuring Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos. The image shows an elderly man wearing a flat cap, coat, and scarf, standing outdoors with a cane and giving a thumbs-up. Next to him is a handwritten sign that reads: “From Anne Frank to Hind Rajab, Guernica to Minab — Never Again! For anyone.” A crowd and buildings are visible in the background.

Foreign interference is a serious concern.
But assuming Chinese-Canadian organizations are foreign agents simply because they celebrate culture, promote trade, or have ties with China is reminiscent of the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act.
A U.S. think tank claims 575 organizations in Canada are tied to the CCP’s United Front system, without offering any meaningful evidence.
Sweeping allegations like this risk casting suspicion on all Chinese-Canadian organizations and discouraging participation in Canada’s democracy.
However odious the regime in Tehran, war is not the solution – especially not an illegal war that targets civilians, including the 160+ schoolgirls killed by a precision bomb in Minab.
We must be consistent in our condemnation of illegal wars – in Ukraine as in Iran.
I would welcome @jennykwan.bsky.social's bill to be debated in the Senate. It is an important step towards taking the sign from the window.
The confusion is of your own creation. Nobody seriously believes Canada and China have a military-security alliance. You and others are sowing confusion to undermine Canada’s economic reset with China, which happens to be framed as a strategic partnership — akin to the UK, Germany, ASEAN etc.
