If I’m asked about my hobbies, in detail, then I should be a good candidate because restoring cars/guitars/furniture would require me to stay in one place for awhile and I wouldn’t have any time to be wild/reckless/etc.

Filling out my PhD applications like, “I would really like a job that affords me a house because I have a lot of hobbies that involve collecting a lot of weird vintage stuff.”

In this professional photograph, Jack Monger is captured holding an acoustic guitar, looking directly at the camera with a neutral expression. Monger is dressed in a grey button-up shirt, dark jeans, and a grey fedora. A colorful scarf or tie is visible at the neck, and a strap with a floral pattern extends over the shoulder, securing the guitar. The headstock of the instrument clearly displays the "Yamaha" logo. The background suggests an outdoor urban environment with blurred features, possibly a street or sidewalk.

Did a show in downtown Pensacola with a friend. Mainly so I could promote the album I'm in the middle of writing about the C&O Canal (and all the eccentric hillbillies that I'm descended from).

My Mentors, My Pillars: Why I Believe in Paying it Forward The response to my last blog post, the one dedicated to Dr. Richard Fountain, was overwhelming. I was genuinely surprised, though perhaps I...

Wrote a rather heartbreaking blog post today about two of my mentors who have passed away.

I’m happy to have attention but I want them to have attention too, even in death.

The best joke I've written this year is probably:
"Getting certified in Google Meet in 2025 is like getting certified in how to make a conference call in 2011."

The best part of this story is that it would normally be way above my pay grade to know something like this, but one of my former research advisors is now a VP in student affairs and introduced this story to me in the tone of “hey Jack do you want to know a fun fact about our workplace?”

I understand that was incredibly vague so in 2024, at my institution, students were being encouraged to use AI. Cool. Some student used a malware filled AI site to write an essay. An elderly faculty member clicked on one of the supposed sources. And then the feds came to campus. And yeah, Florida.
