I think that we should simply run on prosecuting the rich for their crimes instead of creating a low trust society that will sow the seeds for further fascism

It is self defeating but he can take some level of defeat just because he threaded the holes in the swiss to get through to big enough viewership that he could get away with inefficient workforce management and not realize he'd do better being a better employer

At least that guy was 100% enjoying himself

And also not an evil fascist supervillain

I agree there should be some discussion there. Those were legit stepping stones

But we're sitting here saying with a straight face that prestige dramas of the '80s were "not... as good as [Star Wars spinoff]"

I'm STILL scratching my head at how much better Andor is than it had any business being

I'd like to do a comparison of Soap or maybe even Benson to modern sitcoms but modern sitcoms include Community and The Good Place, which aren't perfect but try so much harder than anything I can think of pre-millennium

Just compare Galactica 1980 or any of the Buck Rogers franchise - no disrespect to Erin Gray or Gil Gerard - to even the worst SF series from the last 20 years. Those were big-ish budget mainstream culture and they were cringey to me at age eight.

Knight Rider
Automan

OK Max Headroom excepted

The Strait of Hormuz "Could This Be A Solution?" facebook post map meme has been badly photoshopped in MS Paint

The poster's profile pic and name have been replaced by "Mr. Morden", a character from the TV show Babylon 5. The caption still reads "Could this be a solution?"

The map portion originally showed the Strait of Hormuz with an illustration suggesting that cargo could be offloaded from stranded cargo vessels trapped in the Gulf, trucked across the Empty Quarter to the far coast of Oman on the Arabian Sea.

It has been modified with the proposed truck route drawn over by a blue channel - again done badly in MS Paint. Above the blue channel is a badly cut out image of a Shadow Battlecrab, a powerful and terrifying spacecraft from Babylon 5 which is described as a cross between a spider and your worst nightmare, firing an energybeam down to the channel, with badly drawn red fire where it terminates

Caption in the map reads:

"Shadows lance the Arabian Peninsula from orbit, vaporizing 300m of rock and soil in a path 500m wide spanning 800km to form a new canal connecting the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea, also ejecting over ten cubic kilometers of vaporized rock into the atmosphere, the equivalent of the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991"

America has a lot of bad electoral systems in use, but the top-two ā€œprimaryā€ is exceptionally terrible.

Proportional representation would solve so many problems with American elections

The situation in CA seems to be as bad or worse than the 2016 SC primary where there were 6 mainstream GOP candidates plus Trump, and the sane vote was split between the six, while a large minority of populist primary voters went with Trump, so Trump won SC with less than one third of the vote

Oh man I had no idea I was spectrumish when I spent about forty five minutes playing along to ā€œThe Talking Drumā€ until the girl in the dorm room above mine banged on the door and politely asked me to ā€œfucking cut that shit outā€

I will say though I would love it if not only did CA and VA counter-redistrict, but if it turns out that the backlash is so bad that Texas spread it too thin in their greed, and they end up losing a bunch of their new 'safe' seats and TX's delegation flips

By being relentlessly nice and playing dumb, but also sympathetic - truthfully saying that my spouse had worked phone support so we knew how tough it was - I managed to get the three extra months of cable bills refunded, and the lost equipment fee waved, from one of the most infamously shitty corps

This is why I have to be the one to call tech support, talk to the pharmacy, etc, not my wife

Once, movers packed our cable modem and TIVO with a cablecard belonging to Comcast, and we thought the box was lost, and also turned out that I hadn't clicked 'finish' or something when cancelling Xfinity

Don’t buy land, make your own. Expand from an infinitely compressed state. As energy density drops, watch for the formation of hadrons and leptons. Make sure you don’t have equal parts matter and antimatter or it will all annihilate itself and you’ll have to start over. Now it’s time to form stars…

Yeah prog is where you name bands after Tolkien stuff. Even then I've never actually liked any of those bands.

Then Dr Welch spent the next few classes carefully going through the math and how yeah it’s weird but it won’t work any other way, and I was like welp if the big brains say something’s weird don’t bet against them until you’ve done the work.

I had an early lesson in that when as a cocky sophomore in every sense of the word I started learning about special relativity with its time dilation and variable math and immediately assumed I’d figure out how it was wrong because the answer couldn’t possibly be ā€˜time and mass aren’t constant’
