A poster for recruiting people living with dementia from underserved communities to a research study. The poster reads: "Understanding and improving care pathways for minoritised ethnic groups diagnosed with dementia. Are you from a minoritised ethnic group? Have you received a diagnosis of dementia in the last six months, or have you been caring for someone who has had this diagnosis? If so, can you help us improve the care pathways for people in your community? Would you like to contribute to this new research on understanding and improving dementia care pathways for minoritised ethnic groups diagnosed with dementia? We want to learn from your experiences so we can address inequalities in the dementia care pathway. This will help deliver inclusive care and support for everyone, maximising a better quality of life for all communities. The research involves: - A pair of researchers visiting your home or somewhere you feel comfortable to talk about your experiences, your health, your memory and your wellbeing. - A friend or family member being present if you so wish. - The questions will not last longer than two hours, and we will work around your schedule to accommodate your timing. There are no right or wrong answers - we want to learn from your experiences. For more information contact Ben at: ben.hicks@nottingham.ac.uk 07881915776." In the top right corner of the poster is the DETERMIND logo, which has a green illustration of a signpost on it and says DETERMIND in green font and the strapline 'finding a fairer path to dementia care' underneath. There are three images of people from different ethnicities on the flyer. One is of a woman smiling, she has a bindi on her forehead. One is of a man hearing a hat and glasses, and the third is of an older man and a younger woman. The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) logo is in the bottom right corner of the poster.

It has an illustration of Brighton pier, with a green pathway running up to the arcade. There is also an illustration of an hourglass. The slide says that DETERMIND takes a person-centered approach as it has increased the recruitment timeline to allow anyone to join at any point after a diagnosis. The study also engaged with the community to share the study opportunity and resources. It also offers flexible visit times to fit in around schedules.

#AromanticSpectrumAwarenessWeek highlights people who identify on the aromantic spectrum. In dementia care, assumptions about partners and family can mean important friendships and chosen family are overlooked. This week reminds us to recognise different ways people build meaningful relationships. 💚

A written piece about UK Disability History Month. It reads:

UK Disability History Month is a chance to reflect on the theme, "Disability, Life and Death". Over the last year, there have been growing, concerning conversations on the value of disabled lives in policy, laws and society.

When speaking to people living with dementia and those who support them, it is clear they are experiencing the knock-on effects of policy. Changes to PIP eligibility, NHS privatisation and funding for local community groups all have significant impacts on wellbeing. Managing one’s own health with a lack of support is a common experience, but one that nobody should have to go through. So, we would like to take the opportunity this month to celebrate the immense resilience from this community, both past and present.

Reflection is only impactful if it reaches beyond this month and into practice. Within research, those with disabilities should be prioritised in designing projects and never face challenges to being part of them. Only then can we capture the most relevant concerns and use these to influence policy and change.

Did you know that people living with dementia are more likely to report inadequate support from care services if:

Their carer is younger, they have more functional limitations, live in a rural area or have mixed dementia compared to Alzheimer’s disease?

More info from our conference coming soon!
