because kids aren't born being okay with this kind of violence. it takes a lifetime of grooming, with culture, and family, and bad influences, (and yes, financial desperation) to create these conditions. and even then, there are limits

but I would say most people do know; they just think it's cool, or it's been so normalised as a thing the family does, or as something that it's okay to do for money. because they've been groomed, had their moral defenses broken down deliberately through their whole lives, by people who knew better.

of course many people literally don't know what they're signing up for; they think they're signing up for something defensive, and then inevitably they end up projecting imperial power (at best) or at worst killing people for no reason. like geologists who come to find the only jobs are in oil&gas.

they're not born believing they're inherently better than another people, or that certain rich people should get to take their land and resources. It's only certain adults who want these things, and they go to great lengths to soften children's minds to the idea, to make it seem exciting, noble.

kids are not born wanting to kill other kids and die in foreign lands; they must be groomed into joining the military

I try to make sure it's not terrible, and that the commit history is really clean, and move on. and then I will periodically do a BIG REVIEW like "find all the places I'm querying a view directly and check for..." and/or find places to totally rip out a feature or subsystem and replace it.

yeah kind of! I actually just think maintenance is twice as hard because you have to both read and write. So in the AI driven paradigm I think it means you have to do more intentional simplification work -- let it build, somewhat ignoring DRY -- and then don't try to perfect it. instead...

These abstractions only separate us from truths we can see and feel: killing is bad. killing kids is bad. destroying hospitals and schools is bad. destroying crops and water supplies is bad.

Rooting our politics in these sort of grounded moral claims, without layering, you can feel their solidity.
