image showing 2 charts, "year 2024" and "hypothetical". they're both bar charts with a bunch of big countries on the left hand side, starting with the US, then China, Russia, Germany, India, United Kingdom, Sauria Arabia + 8 more.

the "year 2024" chart shows the USA's bar going allll the way to the right side of the chart, far outstripping any other country, dwarfing every other except China, with Russia in a distant 3rd and all the others kind of trailing. The value for the USA's bar is almost 1,000; china's is around 320, Russia around 150, and all the rest being between 50 and 100. (hint, it represents military budget in billions of USD.)

In the second chart, labeled "Hypothetical", everything is the same except the US value is the same as china's. All the other bars look much bigger in this one.

Sunlo: Social Language Learning

hey do any Kannada speakers on the TL want to take a shot at responding to some very basic requests for natural spoken kannada phrases?

sunlo.app/learn/kan/fe...

it's really foundational stuff like, how to say "I'm here let's go" -- my friends and I are trying to learn!!

fr tho we do have a cognitive process called "oppositional processing" which activates when we get a sign of "maybe this is going to be an argument"; unfortunately the way we understand it now is that it kind of "takes over" from the much more trusting system. I want both to run, then reconcile :))

definitely consider liz the developer -- my fave pirate-techie organizer/creator -- IDK if you follow but she's been doing antifascist, alternative-grid type organising; runs The Multiverse School teaching people to code, and also a game studio making fun cute shit www.instagram.com/p/DWz4t_tiVB1/

This is a really genuine question for AI ppl -- on the question of AI sycophancy, have we considered having a second model run in the background that thinks I suck and all my ideas are bad?

2. then when i got my eyes tested I was told I had unusually good vision, "you could be a fighter pilot"
3. I was hooked on this idea that I could be a badass due to some inherent superiority!

when the Iraq war starting looming on the horizon, only then I woke up from this thing

don't you think it's a little creepy how they send out grooming officers to high schools all over to be like, "I know you're not legal now, but you'll be 18 soon right?"

because kids aren't born being okay with this kind of violence. it takes a lifetime of grooming, with culture, and family, and bad influences, (and yes, financial desperation) to create these conditions. and even then, there are limits

but I would say most people do know; they just think it's cool, or it's been so normalised as a thing the family does, or as something that it's okay to do for money. because they've been groomed, had their moral defenses broken down deliberately through their whole lives, by people who knew better.

of course many people literally don't know what they're signing up for; they think they're signing up for something defensive, and then inevitably they end up projecting imperial power (at best) or at worst killing people for no reason. like geologists who come to find the only jobs are in oil&gas.

they're not born believing they're inherently better than another people, or that certain rich people should get to take their land and resources. It's only certain adults who want these things, and they go to great lengths to soften children's minds to the idea, to make it seem exciting, noble.

kids are not born wanting to kill other kids and die in foreign lands; they must be groomed into joining the military

I hope this means they are phasing out the TUI πŸ™ just because I'm a hater and imo TUIs are bad software

this is why space exploration (and scientific achievement in general) is a much cooler way to do "national glory" than any other. because everyone wins.

I try to make sure it's not terrible, and that the commit history is really clean, and move on. and then I will periodically do a BIG REVIEW like "find all the places I'm querying a view directly and check for..." and/or find places to totally rip out a feature or subsystem and replace it.

yeah kind of! I actually just think maintenance is twice as hard because you have to both read and write. So in the AI driven paradigm I think it means you have to do more intentional simplification work -- let it build, somewhat ignoring DRY -- and then don't try to perfect it. instead...

These abstractions only separate us from truths we can see and feel: killing is bad. killing kids is bad. destroying hospitals and schools is bad. destroying crops and water supplies is bad.

Rooting our politics in these sort of grounded moral claims, without layering, you can feel their solidity.

MemeText over an image: a rudimentary drawing of a pyramid of cards, with the base layer having 5 triangles, and 5 layers reaching up to the top.

three lines of text, starting from the bottom:
1. people want peace
2. peace through strength
3. 4-6 genocides at a time

I'm not a philosopher but I continue to think that lots of western ethics is getting something wrong: too many layers. Abstractions that only make sense when you're removed from The Thing. Here's an example: What is "peace through strength?" (fig. 1) It's an abstraction, made to separate...
