Hosting your own on something like Digital Ocean is pretty easy. And Ghost and WordPress do give you the option to export your data from your site if you want to move or shut it down

@bdsams.com I found Ghost to be a better blogging platform compared to WordPress. WordPress tries to do everything. The problem is that there are very few managed Ghost providers compared to WordPress providers. And those Ghost providers are more expensive when compared to WordPress.
