Building a blog with Elixir and Phoenix | jola.dev Setting up a website using Elixir and Phoenix, leaning on NimblePublisher for the blog posts.

Wrote a little thing about setting up my blog using Elixir, Phoenix and NimblePublisher. It's running on Dokploy on Hetzner, with bunny net as the CDN, which I'll probably write more about at some point?

jola.dev - Stay in the Loop: How I Actually Use Claude Code Johanna Larsson is a software engineer, manager, writer, speaker. With over 14 years of experience in software development and management, she has worked with clients from various industries, includin...

Some conversations with coworkers and friends got me thinking hard about how I'm using Claude Code, here are a few patterns that are emerging for me: one of the main ones being maximizing concurrency while actually staying in the loop.

AI Didn't Break the Senior Engineer Pipeline. It Showed That One Never Existed. Most organizations never had a model for developing engineers. They had an environment that produced growth by accident. AI just made the luck run out.

If coding is your favorite part of software engineering, keep coding. AI doesn't stop you. But if coding was the only part you were good at, that's a different conversation. The job was always bigger than the code. #bransoncognac blog.bryanl.dev/posts/ai-sen...

💯 I self-host Dokploy on Hetzner and I’m overall very happy with it, but if there was a good alternative I don’t know if I would

Oooh there’s a bunch of stuff. All the big clouds are US. Hetzner is nice but lacks a lot of features. And then there’s Grafana Cloud. Just managed Prometheus+Loki+Grafana with a decent free tier. I also struggle to replace Posthog, Sentry, Stripe, etc

Bit surprised at how limited your options are for a lot of SaaS in Europe. Nothing to do with politics, just didn’t realize how many US tech startups just don’t have similar EU competitors

Yeah that’s what I’ve been using too but it’s so sensitive and I end up running it on the same server I host my projects so…

What are your favorite uptime checkers and why? Just something that helps you feel like you’d be aware if your stuff goes down

Comic strip showing a stand-up comedian under the title "The Ones Who Bomb In Omegas"

He is saying "Hooboy, I should not have brought up the child. This is a tough room, but not the worst room in the city. Am I right?"

Sharing this with a big recommendation. You'll have a hard time finding someone as knowledgeable as @hauleth.dev

jola.dev - Ruthless Prioritization: The Path to Delivery Johanna Larsson is a software engineer, manager, writer, speaker. With over 14 years of experience in software development and management, she has worked with clients from various industries, includin...

Your inner perfectionist is why that 3-week project is now at month 3. Ship the embarrassingly simple version. Get real feedback. Iterate. Every day your code isn't in users' hands is a day you're not learning if you're building the right thing.

That's an interesting thought. Is the idea to encourage organization by showing the notes that have not been organized? Or how do you use it?

7 months ago 2 0 1 0

huh, that's odd, I thought I did implement that. I'll debug that and get back to you. Probably tomorrow!

Thank you for the feedback btw, so helpful ❤️

Ah, damn, I was trying to be clever but I assume you're logging in with Google OAuth, that won't work on the wildcard preview domain. I'll give it some polish and let you know when it's out!

darkdown - Gorgeous notes, nothing else A minimalistic notes platform where ideas come to life. Write in markdown, organize with tags, and share publicly with the world.

Right, I put together a version here (you can log in with your prod account). I should probably rethink the design a bit here to make it nicer, but does that do roughly what you expect? 923a7984.darkdown-app.pages.dev

Ok, so like a split UI with the preview on the right? I used to have something like that, but I could bring back a nicer version

7 months ago 1 0 1 0

Really appreciate that ❤️ It's a passion project but it'd be really cool if people can get real use out of it. All feedback and any ideas hugely welcome!

ah like a preview? You can click "copy link" to make a public link which shows a rendered version. But then it's public, obv. I've taken the approach of keeping it simple, it's for editing so it only has the edit view, but considering adding a preview button to the edit page. Would that be useful?

I wanna share something I’ve been working on in my free time: darkdown.app. It’s an web-based markdown editor, with organization features and easy sharing of either individual notes or whole folders. Gorgeous design, no distractions. Would looove feedback and ideas ❤️

No, AI is not Making Engineers 10x as Productive Curing Your AI 10x Engineer Imposter Syndrome

Another balanced take on AI productivity claims. It's not that it can't increase productivity, but how do you measure that? Delivering 10x faster means a 3 month project takes a week and a bit. Outside of prototypes and greenfield projects, is that realistic?

I’m starting to look around for my next role!

I'm a deeply technical engineer, with over a decade of professional experience in domains from cyber security to distributed systems and decentralized tech.

My personal projects have spanned embedded systems to biohacking—I love learning new things.

jola.dev - Estimates Are More Valuable Than You Think Johanna Larsson is a software engineer, manager, writer, speaker. With over 14 years of experience in software development and management, she has worked with clients from various industries, includin...

Most engineers hate estimates because they've been weaponized by bad managers. But when teams treat estimates as conversations instead of contracts, they actually ship more consistently. Not because they predict better, but because they communicate better.
