I think that “the story is for kids” is a useful reminder sometimes! Not as “and therefore garbage is fine,” but rather: “you, the adult, will receive the story differently.”
A fun find in Nakano: Torihisa, a yakitori bar with an Iron Maiden flag and a Motorhead-inspired demon chicken logo. 👹 🐓🔥The yakitori was not bad — tho we scarfed it down before I could think to photograph it 😅
Had a wonderful time visiting Professor Takahiro Kawaguchi’s “Manga Lab” at Takarazuka University’s Shinjuku campus.
Besides a very nice manga library, they have some impressive sketches by pro animators and mangaka in their student lounge

Popped into the kids anime fair at Anime Japan — attendance is limited to kids & parents, but I convinced them to let me in. I got to see part of the “kid-friendly” Demon Slayer stage show. A bit odd to see preschoolers go nuts for this series when it’s a teen+ title in the US 😅

A week later, i’m back at Tokyo Big Sight for Anime Japan 2026. Lots of elaborate, eye-catching booths, all blasting anime songs, exciting scenes from current & upcoming hits plus people shoving fliers, bags, and goodies into my hand. It’s… a lot.
After a week of back to back meetings, meet-ups and biz obligations, i’m enjoying an unstructured day in tokyo. The sakura is everywhere, it looks almost too pretty to be real

Here's a great example of how illustration & design skills are very important to lettering. Lettering is about a lot more than just putting the script on screen/paper. I believe that skill in drawing improves lettering, & lettering skill improves drawing too.
