I think we once imagined we aspired to create a better, freer, more equitable country than we had, despite often getting it wrong, sometimes horribly.

Tbh, I believe he is the smoke and mirrors part of the act, while those behind the scene set a pattern for an authoritarian state (on the lines of mid-20th century USSR, but pseudo-christian) without the pretense of that 'government for the people' nonsense we like to imagine.
