Bar chart shows the number of heat pumps installed each year in the Climate Change Committee’s 6th Carbon Budget Balanced Pathway. To stay on track to meet legally binding carbon budgets, the UK needs to keep pace with these figures (it is very hard to make up for it elsewhere if we fail on heat). Up to 2024, the number of annual installations was below 200,000, but in 2025 that increases to nearly 400,000. By 2029, it exceeds 800,000 a year.

2025 is the year the UK needs to start installing a lot more heat pumps - or other low carbon heating systems - if we’re to keep pace with our climate commitments.
