Those who have been especially harmed by systemic injustices can think "nothing could be worse than this: let it crash, let them also taste misery." It definitely always can get worse than you imagine.

As a Canadian I have used the term the same way. I am merely letting you know how people who are born and educated in Latin America understand these terms America and American. They may say "Vivo en america, ¡soy americano!" without lie or misunderstanding.
In Latin America the education system teaches world geography with 6, not 7, continents.
Within this frame, using "American" or "Americano" to refer to yourself as a citizen of the USA is wrong and sounds arrogant. I thought you'd find this interesting if you weren't aware.
