Really impressive mapping in this piece
Posts by Lauren Tierney
A few months ago I got to present in the @jhu.edu "GIS After Dark" speaker series, and the recording is now available.
Thank you again to Cassie Hansen for inviting me to share the cartographic work happening at Esri!

Just found this super-useful tool: cmyk.printingbanana.com
I work in CMYK a lot. And sometimes I sample an RGB color from an image as a starting point, and want to find a reasonable CMYK equivalent that *doesn't* use all 4 inks. This tool suggests reduced-ink alternatives.
Discrete and contiguous versions of brown to green, red to yellow to blue, and magenta to blue divergent color palettes.

Well this is delightful!
Ian Muehlenhaus and I are exactly a quarter of the way through our AI mapping experiment. We're making maps using nothing but #promptcartography. One map a day for an entire year. Follow along with #365daysofmaps and learn more at mapdesign.icaci.org
If you aren't following "One Minute at a Time" on Instagram, you are missing out! @wrneff.bsky.social creates informational videos on D.C. history that are truly remarkable.

A few weeks ago, ahead of peak bloom of cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C., I wrote up a blog post on how I mapped trees across the city in ArcGIS Pro and Map Viewer:

Map of North American (mostly CONUS) maximum temperature on March 19, 2026, with a palette that goes blue - green - yellow - orange - red from low to high. The hottest temperatures are in the U.S. southwest and northern Mexico, coldest over Hudson Bay. Desert areas in Arizona and California were 110˚ F or even hotter.
Yesterday’s high temperature across the contiguous U.S. It should go without saying, but it’s astonishingly hot for March.

Image of a map from the 1940s of migratory flyways for ducks, geese, and swans in North America
Two things I love about spring: flowers and the sounds of geese making their way north.
I found this cool map from the 1940s in the David Rumsey collection of flyways for ducks, geese, and swans.

Cherry blossom season is fast approaching in Washington, D.C., with peak bloom projected for late March - early April.
To prepare, I made some maps of blossoming trees in the city:

It occurs to me I never shared the video of my #nacis2025 talk. It's eight minutes of me musing about how to deal with the challenge of accepting praise from colleagues.
