Think about the fact that these complex physiological processes developed over thousands of years b/c the individuals that had those traits survived to pass on their genes. Migration started with short distances & slowly got further as it was more advantageous to do so.

It also adds to how impressive evolution is. Creationists who claim intelligent design over evolution by incremental change honestly picked the most boring option. Evolution is AMAZING b/c what do you mean these complex processes developed through incremental change??? That's so cool!!
Then you get to songbirds, shorebirds, etc. and they're mostly migrating at night (to avoid the predators migrating diurnally) but also because nighttime air tends to be calmer. They're flapping the whole time!!!! For *days straight* in some species!! It's a physiological marvel in sooo man ways
Raptor migration is amazing b/c they're gliding most of the way on thermals to save energy by not flapping! So they migrate during the day since you don't have thermals at night because they form via warm air rising from the land being heated by the sun.

I LOVE MIGRATION SO MUCH AHHHHHH
They just kept coming and coming and coming…
I've had a rough day health-wise so I'm thinking about the Artemis mission and how it's a reminder of the amazing things humans can do AND ALSO its bird migration season and long distance bird migrants accomplish such a massive journey and they do it TWICE A YEAR!!!!
"Hey Meesh what's your favorite bird?"
You fool. You think I have *one* favorite bird? That's for amateurs. I have too many favorite birds to count.

Sorry Ken Casey
Dennis Casey, lead singer of the Dropkick Murphys. His mouth is open speaking or singing and he is wearing a dark patterned short sleeve button-up
Rhett or Link? IDK that guy from good mythical morning or whatever. He has short swoopy hair and glasses and is wearing a blue button up.

MUTUAL AID REQUEST
Looking to raise $1000-1200 for my friend, a Black, disabled non-binary educator who wants to stay anon.
They’ve missed work since ICE began their Minneapolis invasion in earnest, and need help paying for rent, bills and groceries

TBH if he's consistently going over time on lectures I would keep a log of when he does that and that plus other issues you might be able to bring to the department and/or roast him in any end of semester course review

Renee Good: $1,499,580
Alex Pretti: $1,289,249

Victor Manuel Diaz: $2,538
Geraldo Lunas: $2,260

Things I learned in the '21 TX freeze:
- looser clothing keeps you warmer (sweatpants > yoga pants)
- put a sheet OVER your comforter on your bed
- drape a sheet around drafty doors, roll a towel on thresholds
- keep curtains and blinds closed
- use one or two rooms, close up rest of your home
When people base their whole personality & identity around being a fan of certain media, they put said media on a pedestal & become emotionally attached to said media, so that any (even valid) criticism of it becomes a personal offense to them.
Yes this is about stranger things
My hot take about current online discourse is that people need to stop assuming that just because something is very popular doesn't actually mean it's well-done or well written
A Tūī, a dark bird from New Zealand with a white ball of feathers at its throat and a collar of lacy silver threadlike feathers around its neck, stands on a curved branch. Sunlight catches its iridescent feathers so that they shine in a rainbow of colors.
Day 4 of #ArtAdventCalendar, a 2023 Waymakers thank you bird, a Tūī! They have some crazy feather patterns!

Flat illustration featuring a Titmouse and Chickadee eating from a green feeder while a Mourning Dove eats seeds that have fallen on the snowy ground.
A red-footed tortoise adorably looking directly at the camera with its shell balanced on the edge of a water basin
An amur leopard atop a stone shelter inside an enclosure, rubbing its head on a rock to scent mark
A red wolf sitting on leafy snow-covered ground. Fencing is visible behind it
Had a fun birthday trip to the zoo with friends yesterday!
Got some awesome up-close views of the red wolves & other animals out in the snow
Well, I'm officially no longer a "20-something"
I love the Dropkick Murphys because "Irish-American" + "gen X" + "punk rocker who's been at it for 30 years" should be the formula for the most racist guy alive but instead Ken Casey is constantly giving interviews where he's like "fascists are demons from hell and that's where they belong"
Rough digital drawing of a Sharp-shinned Hawk bust. The hawk is in profile. It is a complex mottled color of browns and grays, with a small hooked beak, round head, rufous tinting to the auriculars, and a huge bright yellow eye that makes it look worried. Its feathers are slicked back tight to the body indicating it is alert.
Every Sharp-shinned Hawk I've ever seen looked like it was worried it left the stove on.

if you are food insecure for both the humans and pets in your household there is a tool called Pet Help Finder that can help locate pet food banks nearby and other free or reduced price assistance and supplies for pets.
no one, ABSOLUTELY NO ONE, should have to give up their pet bc of this.
OK NYC I need you to keep this energy so we can primary Schumer in 2028
Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.
I think if I ever find a gluten free cider donut that doesn't have corn, I'll actually start crying
A reminder because way too many people are reliant on this shit:
AI summaries are NOT a source! They're an amalgamation of sources that may or may not be even remotely correct!
A very round brown bird looks towards the camera, its pert tail jutting out to the side. It has very notable white eyebrows.
A borb with fabulous eyebrows for #Wrensday
