One of the things that always surprises me is the fan reaction to how bad the 12th and 13th position players on MLB rosters are.

MLB teams just do not care about those roster spots and fans just can't help but overreact to those guys on the roster.

Based on the video I saw last week, him signing with the Long Island "Doesn't duck and gets waxed by a line drive in the heads" would have been more fitting

I'm not fully convinced the Pirates care about that

But how realistic is a top 2 ROY finish if he debuts in mid-June?

I think they sent him down to pressure his agent into signing the extension (Effectively sign while he still has PPI eligibility or we're holding him down until June or later)

I'd wager extension news hits immediately after his debut, which is a pretty clever and nasty bit of work by the Pirates FO.

Send him to down to start the year as leverage in extension talks. Promote him once extension is agreed on, but do so BEFORE it's official so he retains PPI eligibility.
